How well does WiFi work on international flights?

I’m flying from Atlanta to Johannesburg Africa tomorrow. I see I have free WiFi included, but I was curious how well it works? Anyone on here have any experience recently with this?

Hit or miss. Sometimes it’s fine. Other times it’s like trying to get service in Tiger stadium.

Depends on the airline. Just make sure you download the airline app.

I’m replying on Delta free WiFi right now on the way to Europe . 44 mbps download. Wouldn’t want to stream anything but it’s not bad at all for free. You need to have the Delta app and have an account which is free. I’m assuming you are flying Delta since you’re flying out of Atlanta?

I only have experience with Delta and it's been good.

So so. BA.
Don’t forget your jacket. It’s winter there. To the chagrin of flat Earthers.

It has worked fine for me in the past. Usually some movies to watch for free.

Yes sir delta. I’m going to expect the worst, but be happy with what I can do! I’ll probably download some podcast and movies on my phone just in case, and bring my drawing pad with me to pass the time!

Last time I flew BA, they didn't have in air wifi over the Atlantic. Just off the European coast and US coast. This was in 2022

As others have said, works fine when it works. When it doesn’t work, there’s nothing you can do.
Also, I’ve done that flight before. Longest single leg I’ve ever had. Get up and walk every hour or two if you aren’t sleeping. If you wait until your legs start to ache, it’s too late for you to do anything about it.

I flew Delta to Heathrow and had steady service if a bit slow. BA back had nothing.

The airlines that have switched to Starlink have rave reviews. Starlink has 8;000 active satellites with 12,000 approved, providing incredible speeds.

It only works when you only kind of need it.

As someone who was born in that shithole, my condolences.

on Air France, KLM, and Qatar, the WiFi was fine... Japan Air it sucked....

works well enough to text, hit or miss sending/receiving pics.
Definitely wouldn't rely on it to stream anything.

I have only used it when flying to the UK. It was OK but slow at times

Too late for your purpose but for future it depends on the system installed on the aircraft. Delta uses Intelsat (formerly GoGo) which has coverage throughout most of the system but they’re converting their fleets to Viasat , a more robust provider but has limited coverage in the Pacific and South Atlantic until 2026 when another satellite comes online.
