200 year old live oak or Dollar General?

A piece of property has an ancient live oak that must be removed to build a Dollar General.
The free market part of me says it is the owner’s property to do with as they wish. They bought it and can cut down whatever they want. If more people cared they could have pooled their money, bought the property, and protected the tree.
The conservationist in me says we shouldn’t allow such a natural treasure to be removed for development, especially since there are 2 other Dollar Generals in a 5 mile radius. The value of the tree to humanity and nature exceeds whatever profit the property owner could realize.
What say you?

Nothing sinful in cutting down a single tree for the sake of subduing the earth. There's no moral imperative to preserve older trees compared to young ones. Humans are made in God's image, not trees. We just want to make sure we're not being abusive of the environment but rather be good stewards.

Just tell people it was used during the civil rights movement to lynch blacks and someone will cut it down for you for free. Hangs capitalism at is finest!

Can I say I don't think the government should be in a place to stop it and still bemoan the fact that a segement of corporate America has completely abandoned the idea of general aesthetic consideration in anything they do?

Tree any day. We have too many Dollar Generals.

I’m not being argumentative, I’n just talking it out.
What about acres and acres of long leaf pine forest being cleared for a housing development?
There is a church near me that wiped out acres of woods just because they wanted fill dirt. Another one took down a bunch of hardwoods because they wanted to expand their parking lot.

1. It's their right to do something shitty with their property
2. It's definitely shitty, you should call it out frequently & in numerous places
Sadly, this happens often. Someone buys a new house, chops down all the landscaping, then moves 3-4 years later, leaving a bunch of twigs. You can't realistically plant a 50 year old tree, and older folks dont have 50 more years to wait ya know.

Team Live Oak on this one.

If it's an old growth tree and truly stands out, I would wish the owner would be convinced to keep the tree and do something else with the land.
Why is that people don't keep the trees down here? Hurricanes? Where I grew up in Alabama, the neighborhoods had yards with beautiful, tall trees everywhere. It was nice.
We do not need yet another Dollar General anywhere. They're kinda ghetto and also nothing will be just $1 much longer. It's false advertising.
You know you're in a less than ideal area if you're by one.

I’d say, unless the tree had been a witness to some major historical event, it’s more than likely outlived its use to wildlife and should be cut. At that age, it’s more than likely no longer producing acorns and isn’t good for much more than providing shade or offering a place for birds to rest.
Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t care less about another Dollar General, but on my property once a tree outlives its benefit to wildlife, I cut it and plant another.

The fetishization of nature is a pagan impulse. and a hallmark of anti-humanism.

quote:Oaks are my favorite tree but Live Oak is my least favorite of all of the oaks. Those suckers shed year round. They are not like most where it's Fall and done, rake, blow, bag up or whatever, but they are a pain in the arse year round. So, property owner should be able do whatever they want to do with the property.

you don't agree with government at all levels protecting parks and wildlife areas for a couple hundred years?

Private property rights in this country are the most consistently infringed and trampled.
