In 1958, two teams were named national champions: LSU and Iowa. LSU was crowned champion by the Associated Press (AP) and United Press International (UPI) polls, while the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) selected Iowa. LSU finished the season with an 11-0 record and defeated Clemson in the Sugar Bowl. Iowa, with an 8-1-1 record, beat California in the Rose Bowl.

Auburn gave LSU plenty of time to claim it... decided Tigers were champions back then. Surely noboby will notice if it was Auburn or LSU tigers...
