I have got some raccoons eating my dogfood and just generally fricking things up on my porch. I live in a neighborhood so I will need to be somewhat covert.

My question is: will a .22 short Kill a grown racoon?

Probably, but a suppressed 22lr is the answer

Shot a coon with 22LR Stingers. He stood up to fight on his hind legs with half his head gone. Snarling like a sumbitch.

I used to use a bow in an urban setting for coons.

Are the neighbors too close to use subsonics?

22lr sub-sonics with a suppressor sounds like a Benjamin pump

Absolutely, especially if you put it in his dome. If you’re aiming for center of mass in his vitals, it’s still one shot kill but maybe not instant death so be prepared for it to sling blood on your porch or garage while it’s dying. I’ve killed a shitload of coons with my air rifle that is a little less powerful than a 22 short.

If you open your door or window and shoot from inside the house with them the report can't be heard outside. I use this method for armadillos

I had a coon in my attic a couple months ago. I set a trap, which you could do also, and set my cell phone game camera up as he made a hole in one of the eaves vents. I got a picture of it out and on my roof and ran out with my gamo break action .17 pellet gun, took my time and shot it in the back of the head. It rolled off my roof and I didn’t give it enough time to do anything before I hit it again point blank.

Point being I’d assume most .22s are better than a break action .17.

Trap it in a live trap. Throw the whole setup in a trash, tote, ice chest filled with water.

I caught one in a persimmon tree and shot him between the eyes.
He shook it off and hauled arse.

You grazed him and he hauled arse.
To the OP a 22 short will definitely kill a coon. A bolt action rifle or lever gun with subsonic is probably less noise than a pellet gun, I would use hollow points.

I had a coon dragging one of those traps around on my porch. He lost the leg and kept on going for a few years after. Tripod was the only coon I let hang around, guess I respected his resilience

I would never have an outdoor cat so I would never kill a raccoon for wanting a free meal.

Read through this thread again.

Look at the stories or people that wounded one or had it sitting in a leg hold trap for hours. Is drowning that much less humane than running off with a face wound from an underpowered rifle?

Love the raccoon stories. Rimfirecentral had a thread about coons that was hilarious.
