My son was just named godfather of his best friend’s expected first child.

I’m not Catholic, but I want him to do all the right things. I know growing up in Acadiana that a parrain has certain responsibilities.

Can y’all help me help him?

Look, I’m as full of shite most days as anyone in here. But I’d appreciate serious responses on this one.

I’m a parrain. Just be there and suit up and show up for the kid. Take care of the kid if something happens to mom and dad.

Did this really need an entire thread?

The real responsibility is to raise the child in the Church, as your own, if mom & dad pass away. That means being there as they grown up, helping them in their life and Faith. I understand the Faith part seems old-fashioned, but it really is what a God-parent is. And someone the parents trust, so their child doesn't end up an orphan. It is a very honorable responsibility.

I’m a Parrain. It’s an honor to be named one.

Send them a gift on their bday/christmas. Most importantly, always have the kid on your mind especially if anything happens and be ready to step up.

If your son wants to take it seriously, he should be a role model in the Catholic faith. If he doesn't attend mass weekly already, he should start doing that. A lot of people BS this stuff but he has a chance to better himself while he sets an example for his friend's kid.

Attend the baptismal seminar.

Be ready to step in to assist the parents in raising the kid in accordance with the rules of the Church.

Be a quiet example of a faith-filled man.

Buy the kid a present at Christmas and Easter.

When he is a struggling teenager, reach out to let him know that he has a parrain who is available.

You could let your adult son be his own man?

Remember the child’s baptism anniversary. Celebrate it with cookies or something cool. Be there as the kid grows up and show up for different events/milestones.
