He set the template for the superhero film villain.

Watch young Stamp in Billy Budd to see his range.

There’s a great interview where Stamp talks about how excited he was to work with the great Robert Ryan on Billy Budd. But he got to the set, and Ryan ignored him and refused to be civil to him. After the filming, Ryan pulled him aside and explained that his job was to be Stamp’s character’s enemy. And he did not want any note of friendship leaking out and compromising their scenes together.

Two decades later Stamp gives us one of the best film villains of all time.

When he was young Stamp had a couple of great role models for villains in Robert Ryan in Billy Budd and Ricardo Montalban in Blue. Really hard to imagine a meaner character than Ryan's in Billy Budd.

Billy Budd in one of the sailing ship movies that are kind of "Must watch".

Captains Courageous 1937

Master and Commander 2003

The Bounty 1984

Mutiny on the Bounty 1962

White Squall 2003

Captain Horatio Hornblower 1951

That's all I can think of. Probably leaving off a couple good ones.

ETA: Recently watched To The Ends of the Earth (Three episode BBC Series) free on Prime

This diverse, complex and haunting trilogy of William Golding novels charts a dazzling, hazardous sea journey from England to Australia in 1812-1813, as experienced through the eyes of one young Englishman, Edmund Talbot. During his journey, he goes through his own rites of passage from youthful bravado to maturity, from arrogance to humility.

His persona of Zod was perfect. He def seemed like an egotistical, evil, maniac with a mostly cool, composed demeanor. Besides Reeves and the theme music he's the next most memorable thing about those movies.

Damn... RIP Zod. Actually the first thing that actually came to mind for me was his role in Yes Man:

Billy Budd, Far From the Madding Crowd.

More recently, The Limey.

He was a great screen presence and a ladies’ man in real life…
