Just a thought while reading the “most iconic rock song” thread.

I don’t think any of those songs would be hits today. In fact, the bands would not be super stars. Sure, most of them would still be famous, but more niche acts playing to the subset of rock fans, not the masses they originally played to.

One of the causes is that the guitar hero is also dead.

I don't think rock will ever be "dead." It also kind of depends on how you define what "rock" is. There are a lot of popular bands today that could loosely fit that genre, but they aren't anything like the rock music we knew from the 00's backward.

Not completely.

The crowds at these shows being half kids in their 20s gives me some hope

Today labels are more interested and just signing one person because it's way cheaper than an entire band. It's also cheaper to ship around a pop star or rapper than it is a band. We also have an entire generation raised on social media and TikTok meaning you're going to have to blow up on there as opposed to places like MTV.

That being said bands like Sleep Token have been blowing up lately while Metallica, Green Day, and Foo Fighters can still sell our stadiums. While other bands like Paramore and All American Rejects have seen a resurgence in popularity

Variations will wane, some might near die, but rock as monolith circa 50-60-70 has been on it's way out for a long time.

And it's not quality but mechanisms of delivery. When your music was on vinyl and radio was a tether there were just a few styles of chain. But ever since recordable delivery (think walkman, etc) our choices have multiplied with leaps in ways of delivery.

Variation is good. Rock is good. Tomorrow's will be different. And the limiting factor that stodgy old man, stuck in his variation while in his 50's, unless it happens you're a cranky old dame.

These are 30-50 year old legacy bands. The Rolling Stones are still selling out stadiums as well.

If this is considered rock, then it is dead.

You should’ve just thrown in Ed Sheeran and the Jonas Brothers.

Rock has always had its spinoffs and genres - Metal, punk, grunge, hair - but no one said it wasn’t still rock.

There are virtually no young rock bands that are beyond the niche level today.

If I am overlooking someone, please let me know because I want to give them a listen.

You have to understand that this is nostalgia board and is in no way a reflection of anything remotely current. This board is one of the last places to go to get any idea of modern music.

Oh and by the way https://www.impericon.com/blogs/magazine/live-nation-report-rock-and-metal-are-more-popular-than-ever

According to a brand-new report from Live Nation, rock and metal have never been more in demand – and the numbers speak for themselves: more streams, more ticket sales, and more fans grabbing arena seats to see their favorite bands live.

Technology has changed it. Sound. Visuals. Equipment. Etc.
When rock was best it was about the music. Vinyl era

No going to a show tomorrow and it’s sold out.

As long as the Beatles are around, it's still here.

A 25-year-old legacy band?

And Mammoth is ok, but not popular by any stretch. They normally either open for someone or play the House of Blues or a club.

No, the music industry is.
Much like the movie industry.

Generic rock is dead, but metal snd hardcore are bigger and more mainstream now than ever. Sleep Token, Bad Omens, Spiritbox, Knocked Loose, Poppy, etc are all hugely culturally relevant right now.
