Yet there’s another reason to be on the lookout for Aunt Gladys. Multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros. and New Line, home of Weapons, are already talking with Cregger about making a prequel exploring the origin story of the strange aunt who suddenly arrives in town.

One of Weapons’ conceits is its chapter structure centering on particular characters, and sources say that Cregger actually had a chapter focused on Gladys and some of her backstory. He ultimately pulled that section from the script for length purposes. Now with the movie’s wild success, that lost chapter would be expanded into a full-length story. Sources say no deals have been made, nor is there any timeline.

That’s partly because Cregger is already in prep on his next feature — he wasn’t even in town for the opening of Weapons, as he was in Prague in pre-production on his Resident Evil reboot for Columbia Pictures, for which he is to receive at $20 million payday, an astounding figure for a filmmaker working on only his third feature (not counting co-directing little seen 2011 feature The Civil War on Drugs, which he made far before becoming an A-list director, or 2009’s Miss March for Searchlight.) Evil is scheduled to open in theaters on Sept. 18, 2026.

The question on many lips is: Where will Cregger go next? If he was already a filmmaker on the rise thanks to the out- of-nowhere success of his 2022 debut, Barbarian, Weapons has given him carte blanche and a pen to write his own ticket (with the help of his CAA and Artists First reps, of course).

The Weapons prequel is only one of his options. There is Henchman, an original story that would be for Warner Bros. that now its DC Studios division must seriously consider. And there’s Flood, a sci-fi script that he’s already written.

I hope he doesn't get stuck doing franchise crap. Just keep churning out some fun, original scripts like he has been

Boom! Called it. I thinks a prequel could work but no mas after that. But they’ll probably do a third with a new director and it’ll be awful.

My post from the other thread a few days ago

They could do a prequel with the Aunt doing her witchy weapon stuff in like the 1920s or something.

WB needs their new James Wan because the Conjuring movies are out of juice. I think there’s one left this year. Expect WB to milk this for all its worth.

Wild that a movie that's a no better than an 7 out of 10 is already getting talks for more movies. Did anyone else think the movie lost itself during the final 20 minutes?

No I thought the last 20 minutes might’ve been the best part personally

Can you blame them after such a successful opening? 81 million and climbing.

Don’t care.

Here’s an idea: try to make another original horror film.

It gets 3.5 stars from me. Thought it could have been better.

I think is direct reflection on the state of the movie business right now.

They are grasping at anything to work. The moment something hits they are gonna milk the shite out of it.

I enjoyed the movie, but I have no interest in watching a prequel. It is ok for things to be mysterious. Hopefully Cregger will do something new again. So far he is 2 for 2 and for goodness sake please dont trying to connect Longlegs(Not his movie), Frank from Barbarian and Aunt Gladys in some sort of Universe.

More good stuff is always a positive.

Everything I'm hearing is that this is authentically a good (very good?) movie. Not some over hyped studio promoted trash (like Agatha). I just am not a fan of them running 'sequel' for a character many might not have even heard of because they've not seen it yet.

So far, I've remained spoiler free, but now I'm forced to figure there's something special about Aunt Gladys.

I didn't see it but I read the full plot synopsis and I'm having trouble seeing why it's getting such praise. Maybe it was well done or something but the plot sounds boilerplate as hell for these low budget horror films.

No one wants to make simple, original stories with believable characters anymore. All you have to do is look at the nearest showtime for a theater now; it’s dominated by high-budget superhero films and low-budget retcon horror films. The traditional mid-budget film is dead now.
