I am having both A/Cs and duct work redone in this house.

I am having two Trane Heat Pump Deluxe units installed.

It's $33,500. Happy frickin Tuesday. Going back with Goodman would be about $26K.

I don't even know what to say about this.

I must have lost my mind but these Goodmans are on their last legs.

I'm not crying but I feel like I should be close to it.

I just did simalar. all the major brands these days offer the same warranty on coils. According to my guy ALL the coils are shite, my original was 20 yo. He said thatll never happen again regardless of brand. So I went w Goodman which was 40% cheaper.

Correct my coils went out (Goodman). I replaced the Air handler in the attic for about 1500 (carrier). I have no idea why he's getting quotes so high. I got 7,000 quote on a carrier system installed just last year 3 ton system

I have family in the business and asked if this quote was high. He said no. Just what it costs.

This is complete redo. Inside and outside plus duct work.

He's getting BOTH units replaced, so it's 2 complete units.

I’ve had two replaced in the last year. One was a 2.5 ton (sure comfort, cheap rheem brand) with electric heat, tough to access upstairs, for 8k. The other one was a 3.5 ton (rheem) with gas heat for 11k.

I had no real ductwork done, so maybe that’s the cost difference. No clue.

If you’re in BTR, give me an email and I’ll give you my guys contact.

I just don't get why it all has to be crappy now. We know how to make things that work and last, and companies just don't do it. Is there a speed queen version of AC's out there who is bucking the trend? Someone should open a metal fab shop and get it done.

Think I'm going to invest in my own equipment over the next few years, service my own stuff. Modern digital manifolds take the guess work out of most of it, can get everything I need for $2,000.

I'll install mini-splits all over my house before getting raped like that.

What is your reason for going with new ductwork? If it's Joval steel round pipe, then at most you may have to change the insulation wrap that is on the outside of the pipe and have them check all seams to make sure they are screwed together and taped like they should be.

I changed out my 4 ton unit 4 years ago and used the existing duct work from the supply plenum to all the registers. They did put in new transitions and the supply plenum since my old one was not compatible with the unit.

If they are removing the round steel pipe and replacing it with that flex duct, you are downgrading in my opinion.

They claim my ducts are undersized for my house, it's poorly laid out and thats why it's so hot in parts of the house. System is under strain.

I think it seems really expensive but my family wouldn't lie to me. He thought they're actually giving me the duct work for free.

These are heat pump units so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. So the price is a complete rebuild.

I'm a bit confused because I googled and these units seem much much cheaper but I'm not sure it's complete or just the compressor.

Current system is 9 years old. It's working. I'm probably being a bit preventative but I have small kids and its been a hassle heating the home last couple winters when they babies.

Umm, unless I don’t know wtf I’m talking about, a Trane should last you 20 years. 10 years easily, probably 15 years with a a few repairs, and 20 years before thinking of replacing it.
Hell, last May I replaced a 15 year old NuTone unit that was in the house when I bought it. I didn’t even know NuTone made central HVAC systems . I have a Ruud now and I’m expecting at LEAST 10 years.

At the very least I'd get a few more quotes for the work you're having done to make sure all that changing out the ductwork is necessary.

I did my own ductwork when I bought my house in 92 since it was an older house with only window units. A friend of mine in the business got me the unit and installed it and it served me well for 27 years before I replaced it.

I used 8 in. round pipe for most of my direct runs and used 10 in. to a point where I could branch off to two 8 in. lines to complete one run to 2 registers and it has served me well all these years.

When I replaced my entire system both the inside unit and the condensing unit outside 4 years ago it ran me $6500. Things have gone up to stupid levels since then in just about everything when it comes to the mechanical end of homes.

I have two of their pieces of shite. Replaced a coil every couple years in them and they voided the extended warranty on one for a failure to register. Google their class action lawsuit for their raging piece of shite coils. They’re a shitty company.

OP shop it. HVAC is full of sales bro business models now.

private equity has been buying up established small outfits like crazy. Their model is to stop do as much service and focus on sell sell sell. Moving $10,000 boxes is where the money is. Not replacing caps for $200

Then just rework the ducts for now. Replace the ac's when they need it.

I wonder what that would cost.

Yeah...that's not happening.
