Looking for some guidance/recommendations on ear protection for hunting. Not over the ear (too hot), but an ear plug design. One that does well with amplifying natural sounds directionally while auto protecting from the higher decibel noises (gun shot). Blue-tooth capable would be a plus as well.

Look at the otopro impulse. They’re passive so no amplification but they don’t cut much sound until they need to. I haven’t had any issues hunting with them. They also make very nice electronic in ear protection, but I have not tried it.

I went through this evolution already. I had walker silencer ear buds and liked them a whole lot. They were pretty cheap to boot ($80 on sale), bluetooth function, rechargable, etc.

I ended up getting an ear infection from them because no matter how diligent you are about cleaning them and changing out the foam, eventually you're going to get shite in your ear with them if you use them every time you should use them.

I went to walker silencer over the ear muffs and I like them MUCH more than I did the in the ear digital plugs, even when it is hot outside. The only thing I don't like about them is they don't have wind noise suppression and you might as well just turn them off if it's windy.

I wouldn't rule out over-the-ear. I wear mine in extreme heat (130F+) often.

1st suggestion is to buy a silencer. Nothing better than that.

2nd is Axil. I have a set that I use. They work great but I use them at my gun club/range.

I don't hunt and neither does my son without a silencer (save for shotguns).

A friend has a higher end brand and i couldn't stomach the price. Do the Axil fit well, any pros cons yhou'd like to add? I already hunt mainly with a supressor.

These are the ones I have:

Axil GX Extreme

I was a coach for my son's trap team and I got tired of over the ear that I had. I wore these 2-3 days a week for a few hours. I love them.

now it's all I wear when shooting.

They come with several different sized foam so they will fit any size ear. I highly recommend them.

The over the ear I had and still have them are the Howard Leight. Biggest issue was the size at trap practice or matches. When I wasn't on the line I'd take them off and had to try and keep up with them. With the Axil, just put them in the case and in my pocket.

I recently bought the Walker ear muffs with Bluetooth. I wanted something I could use to hunt and cut the grass. Hate ear buds because they NEVER stay in my ears. I like them but not overly impressed with the sound quality on Bluetooth. Not loud enough when cutting grass. Should be fine to hunt with tho because I don’t listen to music while hunting. I will listen to an LSU game tho lol

I know it’s not what you asked, but I bought a suppressor for this reason. I couldn’t stand the in-ear type.

My wife got me the Axil for Christmas a couple years ago, and I just couldn't get them to stay in. I tried all the sizes. I just can't do ear buds in general unfortunately. They must fit plenty of people or they wouldn't sell any.

I still use over the ear muffs. Fortunately, I tolerate them even in hot temperatures, 90->100 deg. If others are hunting w/ me, I use electronic. If alone, I use old fashioned non-electronic. Unfortunately, over the ear muffs are not compatible w/ the western-type hat I like to wear. I've tried Caldwell behind the ear electronic muffs, but the amplification is inadequate. Other brands are more expensive. Before Bluetooth/in the ear buds I read an article about hearing loss. The author recommended over the ear muffs. Most sound conduction is done through the ear, but some sound conduction is done by bones outside the ear. His point was that ear plugs alone do not block sounds counducted by bones outside the ear. Whenever I think about in the ear type plugs, I hesitate because of that article. Does anyone have any additional information on the topic? I've also been concerned that not all in the ear buds are designed to suppress the sudden loud noise of gunfire. Do the in the ear buds being sold to gun enthusiasts suppress gunfire to a safe level? Of course, good sound suppression w/ in the ear buds is very dependent on a good fit. Despite trying different sizes, my Apple ear buds don't fit well.

Otto noise barriers.
Have the Axil. Like these better. Little more, but not up in the custom fit range. Can use many different types of comm tips.

I got these a couple years back after wearing foam ear plugs for years while duck hunting. I got tired of not being able to hear others talking or birds. Pricey but I really enjoy them.
