People speaking out about Kratom energy drinks

USA TODAY
She thought it was just another energy drink. It took half her bodyweight and sent her to rehab.
Kim Maloney says she needed a pick-me-up. She had been struggling with energy in the morning. When someone she trusted recommended a Feel Free tonic that contained kratom, she bought it from a local CBD store in 2021. The little blue bottle, she says, looked similar to a 5-Hour Energy. She thought it was harmless.
But for her it wasn't, says the 49-year-old Ohio mom of two. "Nobody knew at that time what it was," Maloney says. "You figure 'all-plant-based,' 'all-natural.' I didn't know too much about kratom. I did not know it was that addictive."
Maloney says she soon fell into a debilitating kratom addiction, one that eventually had her drinking upward of 10 kratom drinks a day. Her addiction, she says, took nearly everything from her: Her car. Her house. Her 27-year marriage. Nearly half her bodyweight. At one point, she says, she weighed 70 pounds.
"My eyes were rolling in the back of my head. I couldn't walk straight. I didn't leave my couch for months. I had pancreatitis. I had shingles. I was sick. I mean, I was really sick. So my daughter, who lives in LA, said, 'You know what, mom? I'm done. If you can't get off this stuff, I'm done,' " Maloney says. "My blood pressure was like 58 over 49. I was dying."
USA TODAY spoke with over 20 people who say they became severely addicted to kratom - a plant ingredient found in products sold at gas stations, liquor stores and smoke shops across the country by various companies. Many of the people we spoke with had no history of substance abuse prior to ingesting kratom. Some were health and fitness enthusiasts who thought kratom was just like any other wellness supplement. Others thought it was a healthy alternative to alcohol. A few mistook it for a run of the mill caffeine drink, like coffee or tea.
But kratom has addictive potential, medical experts say - and getting hooked on it often carries devastating consequences. A mom in California says she maxed out at least two credit cards to fuel her addiction - now she doesn't know what the future holds for herself or her 9-year-old son. A father says his addiction drove him $50,000 into debt and tanked his credit score into the 500s. Crushing withdrawals, he says, have made it extraordinarily difficult to quit; still, he's trying to rebuild a life for himself and his young child.

Big pharma running an all out campaign. They want everyone hooked on their pain meds. Can’t have anyone self regulating. I’ve taken kratom on and off for years to handle my back pain and never had an issue. Dumbass Louisiana politicians allowed these lies and misinformation to convince them to ban it completely recently. There has never been a recorded death from OD where kratom was the only substance in the toxicology report. The actual science goes completely against banning it

It isn't just the kratom but it also has kava.
The kava works like benzos and the kratom works similarly to an opioid but in the doses normally in these "supplements," it works as a stimulant. It is trying to tear your body apart in a similar (but admittedly not as strong) way polydrugs like meth and fentanyl do. Over time it will desensitize the GABA and Mu receptors and they will be feinding for more and more Feel Fresh.

It's because RFK Jr has been going after kratom and 7-Oh. I believe he's going to try and get 7-Oh scheduled soon, which will probably eventually be followed by a scheduling of kratom. We'll see more of this in the coming weeks and months as the government continues their war on safe alternatives to the big pharma options.
ETA - here's a random link for anyone interested, there's many more sources for it as well...
FDA Moves to Restrict 7-OH Opioid Products
quote:
In July 2025, the FDA announced that 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), a strong form of the kratom plant, should be scheduled as a Schedule 1 controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act. With this action, the FDA is targeting fake or enhanced types of 7-OH, not the typical kratom leaf itself, which only contains a small amount of 7-OH.

That Feel Free is messing people up. It’s not cheep either when you’re doing several a day.

Kratom would work for me maybe 50% of the time. I tried Kava a handful of times, and I never felt anything.
I took a significant amount of Kratom over a 6 month period because I had convinced myself I was still sober of if I wasn’t taking the harder stuff.

Should have been outlawed years ago. People are getting addicted to this crap and spending incredible amounts of money to buy it because they have to consume so much of it in order to avoid withdrawals.
I don't understand how someone can buy something from a gas station and not recognize that they probably shouldn't trust it.

I completely agree. I was taking an extremely large amount of it everyday.
I did buy it from a “reputable” source online. On rare occasions I would grab some from gas station if I was desperate.

...how?
There seems to be a HUGE part missing from "drank one bottle of what I thought was 5-hour energy" to "full blown addiction"...like, the actual story.

The big pharma full court press is on.
IF marijuana and kratom are illegal the alcohol should 100% be illegal it causes an order of magnitude more health issues, addiction, crime, desths etc.
Lets do alcohol.....

Damn dude don't be dense, she didn't say she had a full-blown addiction after one, it turned into that over time, but it started from the one that turned into many.

As I said, that's the actual story, along with what psycho-social problems manifested as her addiction.
This "one hit and I was addicted" bullshite is worthless propaganda that has no value to an actual discussion on addiction and belongs in the shitty 80s/90s where it was created.
Hence why I said they left out the entire story.

Its funny alcohol and gambling never get mentioned. Big alcohol has the advertising dollars to lobby against their competition like big pharma does with these astro turf campaigns.
Anything in excess can be peoblematic. The war on drugs has been an abject failure. Where is personal responsibiity????

I love Kratom And use it often. The problem here isn't Kratom, it's people making individual choices and not being able to control their impulses. People can become addicted to Kratom just like they can caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, sugar, etc but I don't see anyone shouting from the rooftops to outlaw those.

Yeah it can go too.

Yep. Back in my youth, I liked benzos too much. My parents sent me to rehab and the people who came in that place in the worst shape were always the alcoholics. Their bodies were just giving up on them.
One guy came in a wheelchair. He was older so I just thought he was handicapped. But after a few days of him doing the detox thing, he was up and walking around. He was literally killing himself drinking so much to where his body was already starting to shut down. The pain pill people in there would come in feeling like they wanted to die. The alcoholics came in actually dying.

The alcoholics get to that point because society permits alcoholism as an accepted addiction, basically. And you can hide it somewhat (which is often covered by others due to the social acceptance) to amplify the consumption levels.
I've been around a LOT of addiction in my personal and professional lives and gambling is the worst. Personal opinion.
