Southwest boarding has gotten terrible since they started charging for checked bags

Every flight has run out of overhead space
Boarding process has completely slowed

I mean, to be expected. People so used to checking and now trying to save $50 so gonna bring on everything they can.

Imagine people thinking this would reduce pre-boarding.

Well SW offers to check for free if won’t fit in carry on… might as well.

They haven’t implemented assigned seating yet. That will be the test to see if it does, but I’d imagine it won’t as they’ve allowed to go on so long and people are used to it at this point.

Any reward card holder can still check a bag for free. I think at booking allows you to do it for up to 8 people with you.

So long as they are on the same reservation, that's correct. Once the bookings are made, those reservations cannot be "combined" so the tickets need to be booked on the same reservation as the card holder and the card holder but have that card active at the time of travel.

I'd be interested to hear how Chase is doing with the SW card at this point.
If all these actions helped or hurt.

it's an issue on United as well...boarding groups 1 and 2 are almost half the passengers...I was on a flght recently in group 2 and I was the last one allowed to bring a carry-on on board...and there were still 30 people behind me in group 2.
United gate agents, however, were counting bags as we scanned our board passes, so they knew exactly when to cut people off...SWA will need to do the same.

Its an issue on every carrier and the Gate Agents could easily do a better job of ensuring only two bag and sizing, but the real issue is the FAs not monitoring people putting their backpacks in the overheads instead of under the seat.
But having flown SW for many years before permanently swapping to United, I'd agree with the poster that I almost never saw bag issues with SW. See it about 20% of the time on United.

What? I don't know how long you've flown or where, but it never, ever, ever, happened. If you've flown to the NE during the winter, the people ignoring "Don't put your coats in the overhead until after everyone has boarded" were ignored forever, 20 years ago.
ETA: Domestic FAs have never paid attention to backpacks.

I have my hearing disability linked to all of my travel profiles. With Delta, for example, whether I pre-board or not I am not allowed to book or sit exit row seats. With SW and the open boarding process, if I was traveling alone and pre-boarded they would always stand in those exit rows during pre-boarding to prevent pre-boarders from trying to sit there. I normally just went towards the back of the plane anyway but every time they would ask me...."are you pre-boarding?"
The next time I book a SW flight I may try to book one of the exit row seats just to see if it lets me (and it shouldn't). but that would deter some pre-boarders if they knew there were sections of the plane they would not be allowed to sit in.

I flew on a United flight a couple years ago with two middle aged, overweight people using canes that were seated in the exit row. Newark employees decided it wasn't worth dealing with.
I was sitting next to them and heard the guy say to his wife "We're probably gonna get moved"

Don't the exit row seats not recline?

Maybe I've just been lucky, but including connections I've boarded 12 SW flights in the last 6 weeks and don't recall anyone having to check bags after boarding and not finding overhead space. I've had A group all but once, so possible they could be gate checking C group before going down the jetway.
The SW 737 Max 8 has awesomely large overhead bins, as long everyone places their bag on its side there is usually enough overhead space.

American does this before boarding even starts. Something to the effect of "If you are seated in boarding Group 7 or above, please use our complimentary gate check to your final destination as the overhead bins will be full"

Had similar happen on TK in IST. The FAs moved a couple of kids (sub 10 year old) and some elderly out of the exit row. We pushed back from the gate, and everyone changed their seats back, and nobody cared.
