I came across this and might give it a try. Seems better than nothing and the reviews look decent. Has a bunch of coupons. Click the 24% coupon, plus you will get the 20% off coupon. Add promo code EU36J5D5 when checking out.

I see $79 with a 20% off coupon. Or are you seeing them after you put it in your cart?

That code wasn't applicable for me, but I still got it for under $50. I had a near miss when a ... smart guy... hit a U turn underneath Westpark and decided to swing out into the second lane yesterday. I can't believe how dumb people are, but they prove it to me, every, single day.

Watch this video...

Also no matter what brand you get, add the circular polarizing filter to reduce glare off the dashboard.

For real. It was unbearable.

I would avoid the knockoff brands on Amazon. They are universally shite products.

If you live in the south, make sure the camera uses capacitors instead of batteries.

I don't know his name but that's the Project Farm guy and he's one of the best product reviewers out there. He's not yelling, he's just excited about helping you make the best purchasing decisions possible!

This isnt meant to provide someone with the best or even real good camera. At $37 it's a better than nothing option. All of the brands seem to have big downsides. Likely failure from heat in a car. Not one sets itself apart long term.

While this is true, if inexpensive is the option, look for brands that have dedicated, branded accessories (eg: Rove and Red tiger). This is an indication that the company you're looking at is slightly more than a fly by night one-off...

I also have a Viofo A229pro on my other car. I will compare them. I'm not expecting the same quality. Will be interesting.

I installed a Rove, this one from Amazon, so far so good. Install was easy. Not sure of the specs differences.

Anyone use a Cobra dash cam? I replaced my detector with a Cobra that integrates live alerts a couple of months ago, and was thinking about their cams.

My coworker uses one of the cheap ones for a few years now. He has caught a few accidents on it including a hit and run.

It may seem like a good deal but dash cam market is in its own bubble. It may say 4k, the sensor will record in 4k, the video will output in 4k...but you will sit there and think "This looks like 720p". It is seriously astounding how bad the average dash cam sensor is. The market is almost entirely controlled by China, even the dash cams marketed under brand names like Garmin are often Chinese crap with a Garmin sticker on it.

I have a Viofo A229 as well but I can't even read a license plate >1 car distance away. Currently looking for a better dashcam myself.

With that said, any camera is better than no camera.

Part of the issue isn't the resolution of camera sensor, but the focal length of the lens. It's a trade off, do you want enough magnification out of the lens to read the plate, or do you want the field of view wide enough to catch all of the action around your vehicle?
