I would argue that whichever QB starts preseason game 1 is behind in the battle

And whichever starts Game 2 is ahead.

Game 2 under the new Preseason format is typically what teams consider "the" Preseason game where they go through their more full 1st team reps and packages.

If Shough starts game 1 and Rattler starts game 2, its because they think Rattler is more likely to start the 1st game of the season. If its the other way they desperately want to give Shough a longer look to grab the job.

Yes, of course they are

I'm talking starting and playing with "the 1s"

The way teams have been doing the new format for preseason, game 1 the starters get a 1 quarter appearance, game 2 very extended, and game 3 sometimes not at all

Ahh, I see what you’re saying. Yeah, historically speaking whoever starts is in the lead. I’m not sure how Moore will want to do the preseason, but I imagine he’d do something similar.

I don’t think we’re going to have much clarity as to who the starter will be until week 3 or 4 though. Whatever lead any one has over he others is going to be pretty slim at the moment

I'd bet all 3 get a chance to start.

Based on results so far, Rattler is in the lead.

So I would imagine it will be

Game 1 Shough
Game 2 Rattler
Game 3 Haener or Shough

If Rattler is starting game 1 and Shough game 2, it means they really want Shough to take the job and want to see if he does.

Shough would have to light it up in game 1 to get ahead methinks

I wouldn't put much stock in game 1 of preseason where the "starters" barely play. I do agree with you on game two though. I can see Moore just throwing a bone to whichever qb deserves to start game one

Its kinda reversed now. Starters basically don't play at all in game 3.

However...I can see with so much uncertainty on this roster and whole new offensive and defensive systems that not being the case for us

Yeah, and Haener would have to look like a pro bowler if he wants a legitimate shot. I know he's looked great in camp, but he looked like a deer in headlights when he was out there last year. Hopefully he's more composed this time around.

I do think that KM wants Shough to be the starter. Using a 2nd to get a QB his first year on the job reads like KM thought Shough could be his guy to me. I would think he gets the most preseason reps overall, and he probably does need them the most. Hopefully all three look great, that would be a refreshing problem to have.

Covering all of your bases here. If Rattler starts game 2 it's because "you were right" and he's in the lead to be the starter. If Shough starts game 2, it's because "you were right" and Rattler is still the lead to be the starter, but they want their new toy to have every opportunity to win the job.

Yes?

I'm not understanding your issue.

I think you are probably looking way too in depth.

The staff has film of both Haener and Rattler playing in NFL regular season games, and both guys have experience playing in NFL reg season games. Shough has no experience playing in an NFL game (even preseason) and the staff doesn't know what he will look like until he plays. The staff will probably give him most of the PT in the preseason so they can further develop a sense of what they have in him. It also gives Shough more and more experience.

Who will be the starter will be determined by the practices...not preseason games. I think the fans put far more into the actual game than the coaches. Kind of like the Senior Bowl. The real work/evaluation is done during the week. The game is just an add-on.

They are going to give whomever they think is most likely to start game 1 the most reps in preseason games. Because coaches are judged on wins and losses and they want to win

I see what you are saying…..

Problem is…. NONE of the 3 QBs have a large sample size of starting regular season experience !!

That’s a Very Special Situation.

In this scenario…. I would hope Moore gets his chosen Starter on the field EARLY…
and starting in EACH preseason game.
That Guy Needs the Experience.

QBs running 2nd and 3rd in the race can get their time later in the games.

I think Rattler is going to start both of them.

It really depends on the team's philosophy and how set they are at QB. Historically, I'd agree with you but with an ongoing training camp battle, I think it's just the ability to get as many reps for the front runner to see how much work they want to give him.

If Rattler looks good, they can feel better about his position as starter and move to Shough/Haener to get more reps for them. If he's a bit shaky, then they can give him more reps if necessary and then cut back time for the one falling behind.

There’s a good chance they both suck. We will find out soon enough
