I do and it sucks. I'm about to be 53 in September. Video games have been a part of life for me since the Atari 2800.

They just feel like I'm wasting time when I'm playing. Like feeling guilty for something. Used to not feel that way. I used to play all day sometimes. Now I can't imagine doing that. Wish I could still do that some days. Just get lost in a game. Only game I'm really playing now is KCD2. And that's a game you can get lost in, but I have trouble playing for more than 30 mins.

Not sure if it's just getting older and not wanting to use my time that way. Or did my brain just simply mature out of all the fun nonsense?

I quit WoW for two reasons a while back. Just not fun and there is no end to it. I think I'm done with games that. I had played a little Destiny 2 last year as well. Fun, repetitive as heck, and neverending. Nahhh.

I find myself watching playthroughs more now, and I find that more enjoyable than playing.. Not sure what that says about the situation... zero effort, can watch anytime, can stop anytime. I get to "experience" the game through people better than me at the game and they're entertaining and funny.

Anyone else in the same boat? It kinda sucks like I said. I feel like I'm losing a fun hobby that I didn't want to lose.

Kcd2 and baldurs gate 3 are the only 2 games of the past 10 years ive 100% and enjoyed. I did hogwaets legacy but nearly had to force myself to do so.

I get my gaming enjoyment from online interaction with others, and not from shooters.

FiveM and RedM, an ark, scum, dayz, or other game where there are RP was servers that are more about story than just shoot, loot, scoot. Even some mobile games with a pc app where theres interaction, stategy and conversation with others.

Hands down 1000% better than social interaction because everyone you encounter wants to be there.

I get bored sometimes just like with anything else but it just takes a trip out dealing with people to make me remember why i dont desire that at all.

I don't think I have aged out of them, I have a handful I still play, I just think devs are not putting out epic games like they used to, at least not in my wheelhouse.

I keep wondering that, I'll have stretches where nothing grabs my attention and I go to bed thinking I could have done something else. I'm 47 and about to start school to finally finish my degree, so I'm going to HAVE to cut back, but it's something I keep wondering about. But it's been my favorite way to unwind at the end of the day for so long, now being married with kids, FINALLY getting everyone settled in bed, house turned down, that's my time and it's so easy to fire up an old favorite like Fallout 4 or AC Odyssey and kill an hour or so just running around.

I finally had to give up on the idea of playing any MMO's, FFXIV was my game for a long time, but every time I renew my sub for a month and give it a whirl, I'm reminded really quickly that I don't have the capacity to dig into any of that game. I keep thinking "I'll just do gathering or crafting just to pass the time", but it's still too much. I dabble in Fallout 76 occasionally, but even that becomes too much to keep up with.

Play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

I felt the same way you are over the last couple of years. The last game I truly got into was Red Dead Redemption 2 and it took 3 or 4 attempts to finally get the 'hook'.

Expedition 33 hooked me almost immediately and I'm on my 3rd play through.

It's incredible.

I've watched a playthrough of that game.

Well the first 4 or so hours. It is an amazing game.

Not aged out but I just don’t see how yall older guys have time to play these longer games. Like when a big release comes out 90% of this board puts in 60-100 hours in about 3 weeks and completes it and it blows my mind every time. I‘ve been playing Expedition 33 since release which was over 3 months ago and I still haven’t completed it at almost 70 hours and I don’t even have kids

This is probably partly do to my unwillingness to give up sleep. I notice a lot of guys on here stay up late and sacrifice getting only a few hours of sleep before work. I’d be frickin miserable

But to answer the OP, about 5 years ago when I was single and off work I’d wake up early and go to the gym, come home and take a shower then game till bedtime (horizon zero dawn). As long as I went to the gym I didn’t feel guilty as I told myself I exercised and I’m not spending money or drinking. Now if I were to do that at 35 I’d feel like a piece of shite. I’ll still get in 2-3 hours once my errands are done, and sometimes stay up late playing on weekends after the SO has gone to bed but I think the days of all day 12 hour sessions are over

I still enjoy gaming but not nearly to the same extent.

I miss when time felt more readily available and opportunities to play multiplayer or coop games with friends was easier to come by.

I tend to focus on replaying certain titles that I really enjoy. Resident evil runs. Souls game runs.

I will play some new titles but the enthusiasm isn’t there like it used to be.

I'm 32 and my tastes have changed but I still loving gaming.

Other than CFB, I don't buy sports games anymore like I used to do every year and I rarely play the everyday shooters like COD unless it's Warzone every now and then to keep in contact with good friends.

I stick to games you can get lost in too like Cyberpunk, KCD2, modding Bethesda rpgs and the like.

Maybe I was just fine with repetitive stuff when I was a teenager but now I look for well made and emotional stuff like Ghost of Tsushima. Things like COD just feel like they're out to bilk people out of money now with few improvements.

I've been playing video games for 40 years now and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. When I find a game I like, I put a lot of time into it. I like to do all the side missions and find all the collectibles, sometimes on multiple playthroughs.

I’m 37 and play a ton. I work remotely though and have free time between meetings. Weekends are tough with kids

I can watch playthroughs on youtube at work during down time. I only feel like I'm wasting time when I do it at home.

Part of that may be guilt of playing video games a lot over the last many years at the house. I used to play mostly when everyone was asleep. Heck, I used to raid on WoW between 11pm-2am like 3 nights a week so I didn't cut into family time. That was not the best thing to do...

But I feel like I haven't enjoyed playing games for a few years now.

And somebody said the social aspect of games make them more fun. That is very true. Most of the people I used to play games with no longer play or they play games I'm not interested in. I have recently hooked up with some old L4D2 friends I used to play with a lot. Looking forward to playing with them again. I think that will be fun.

Fair enough

I tend to vacillate between gaming and reading as my primary downtime hobby. Do you have any others you rotate to? You might just be a bit burnt out and need a break.

I think I'm like many others these days. No attention span. Never been a big reader unless it's books I'm really enjoying. I recently bought The Long Walk and have read a little. That short attention span makes it a challenge to sit and read. I do need to get over that. Maybe cure this attention span thing. I'm sure that affects my gaming attitude too. Get bored of things real quick and easy now.

Yeah, it sounds like gaming losing its luster for you is likely just a symptom of the larger issue you're describing. And like you said, it's become extremely common, unfortunately. Between social media and short form video content, people's attention spans are getting absolutely crushed. Other than a full detox, I would suggest some exposure therapy, though I wouldn't choose something that supposed to be fun, like gaming. Every day, find a long form news article about something you find at least somewhat interesting, and make yourself read it. The whole thing. You can take breaks to just sit, but you can't take a break to do anything else, and especially not to pick up your phone. Start with full fat NYT-esque articles and move into long form New Yorker-esque articles. But like I said, the most important thing is that you turn off notifications on your phone and don't pick it up. Doing so is the root cause of the issue.
