Is the comedy movie genre just dead? Have there been any in the last 5 years or so? Trying to find one to watch tonight.

I liked Good boys. It’s crude and they’re hilarious I thought
Booksmart was solid .
But yes there have been few comedies that are actually funny
It’s all Netflix schlop now

The Weird Al movie is the best comedy of the past few years.

I can't remember just really liking one since 22 Jump Street.

This. Don’t let the child cast fool you, it is 100% an adult comedy.
If you are a Tim Robinson fan, his recent movie with Paul Rudd called Friendship is worth the rental.

Is not dead, there’s some off beat stuff that’s funny still. It’s just not mainstream right now.

i think comedy movies have somewhat died off
television has been solid
I think movies all are aimed at the international market or families

Man, I've been waiting for this to hit free streaming for years now, and it still hasn't.
Comedies have definitely fallen off a cliff, but there are some that I've watched in the last several years (that have come out in the last 10 years) that were good/great:
The Wrong Missy (very funny)
Snack Shack (decently funny but a solid movie)
Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain (hilarious, I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would)
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
I may need to check out Good Boys.

Even though it's been 7 years ( damn) I'd like to throw in Game Night. Also even though more of a romcom Palm Springs from 2020
Streamers don't like comedies unless it's really dumb generic and non-offensive.

It's a serious problem:

The Weird Al movie is on The Roku Channel and Kanopy, both of which are free.
I'll also add Dinner in America. This is sort of a romantic comedy but reminded me a bit of Welcome to the Dollhouse. Its one of the best movies I've seen recently.

I said this in the comedy actor thread and I'll say it here, it seems studios have abandoned comedies due to their poor performance overseas. All studios seem to want to make are blockbusters that should do extremely well at the box office or low budget indie style movies that have a low risk anyway
Comedy movies never did super well over seas given the performances of even great comedies like 22 Jump Street, The Hangover, and Superbad

Part of the issue is the way you make money now.
Comedies are hard to bank because comedy is deeply subjective, ESPECIALLY among international audiences. What might be hilarious in the US might be boring or offensive in China, and vice cersa.
When VHS/DVD rentals stopped being a major revenue source and movies kept getting more expensive to make, comedies are just the hardest ones to pull off. Best chance is to have a comedy that has other sources of appeal (like lots of special effects/action), but that drives up the cost.
