DAT 7/29: Nats (Soroka) @ ASStros (Can't Stand Ya) 7:10

Don't really want to, but still some good discussion around the team for better or worse.
Soroka, interestingly enough, is a piece that's being shopped and would make some sense for Houston considering he SHOULD be reasonably cheap prospect wise. His raw numbers aren't great, but more K's than innings pitched and a 1.13 WHIP. 4.05 FIP to a 4.85 ERA.
Signed a 1/9m deal so wouldn't be much salary added but IIRC it would probably still put them over the tax.

So, let's entertain the thought of ANY deal that could be made that would keep us under the tax threshold
Does any of those deals give THIS team a reasonable chance?
Even if you get EVERYONE back, are they really ready to contribute to a playoff run having not seen significant action?
So all of your hopes are riding on a disgruntled Framber and a struggling Brown that can't find the 6th inning in over a month
I get that it's probably hypercritical, and I do hate this team's approach at the plate, but when does being practical come into play?

I’m quickly becoming a stand pat or even sell guy based on the way this is shaking out. It doesn’t seem reasonable to add pieces to this team in its current form, and the uncertainty around who will return and what will they contribute makes adding seem rather pointless. We are about to have an almost complete starting MLB staff at Sugar Land while the big club continues to trot out these placeholders.

If they are looking to stay under the tax then of course no deal they can make really changes the calculus of this team in it's current form or even if you add JP and the three starters back.
I think any small move that happens will be after they decide they are throwing the current under tax budget in the trash and trying to add impact.

Shop Framber now.
This team is not going anywhere but backwards at this point.
I'm almost to the point that they should shop Framber, Abreu, and Hader.
There is significant rebuild power in the returns those three would bring.
But at a minimum, they need to get a pull a good haul for Framber.

Best i can find, our luxury tax payroll is around $239.8. The first tax threshold is 241M. So theres no room to do anything without exceeding the tax. We exceeded last year so we'd have a 30% tax on each dollar we go over 241.
That has implications for next year as well. The threshold goes up to 244 i think. But if we exceed this year and have 3rd time offender status, were facing a 50% tax on each dollar over $244. Whereas if we stay under, the clock resets and it would only be a 20% tax to go over next year.

Hader has three more years on his deal... he's not going anywhere.
I wouldn't be mad about a good return for Framber.
Abreu has one more arbitration year... sell if the price is right.

If that is in fact our tax number. Idk its kind of hard to nail down because it's bot just active payroll, it includes other shite like dead monies and deferrals. But if it is, basically anything we could add would exceed the tax. Crane has said in the past, he generally prefers to operate under but he'll exceed if we have a team in need and find a move that makes a difference.
The other consideration in all this is that we likely don't have a season coming in 2027. How much additional revenue is crane willing to throw to tax penalties vs stashing away for a rainy [season]

It's because you're older and wiser
Me? I just want to say I told you so and get pats on the back

It' s an impossible move at this point, but Framber is doing his part
I'm more upset that we fortunately/unfortunately find ourselves in this position through sheer oddities and randomness

The front office, the team, and the fans are all at the mercy of the medical/training staff and also of the injured players themselves. The whole Yordan hand situation is fricking mind-boggling how poorly it has been handled. Jake’s leg as well.
Even if they come back in September, this team is very likely to have fallen out of playoff contention, so I don’t see any point in trying to get a shitty left handed bat just to say something was done.

Yes, of course
But you're going to watch the most valuable rental in MLB throw some meaningless games in Aug and Sept, b/c Sugarland somehow mustered just enough runs to cover the none we gave up in a tremendously impossible run to get 20 games over .500
Oh, and you're gonna like it too
You'll have plently mouth breathers keeping you company though

Us or them?
Fair question, but if it were them it would be a 12 game streak that started 5 games ago
