King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have joined an exodus of musicians from Spotify in protest against the music streaming site’s CEO’s links with the defence industry.

“frick Spotify,” the prolific Australian psychedelic rock group said in a social media post on Saturday, announcing that a new demo collection of music would only be available on Bandcamp.

In another post they said they had “just removed our music from the platform”, though some hours later much of the music was still playable on Spotify.

A spokesperson for the band told Guardian Australia their “entire catalogue will be coming down” but the process “takes time because of the different labels and distributors”.

The band said the move followed Spotify’s chief executive, Daniel Ek, leading a €600m ($1.07bn) investment in Helsing, a German defence technology company specialising in AI-driven autonomous combat.
Ek is also chairman of Helsing, having joined the board in 2021 when his investment fund Prima Materia put €100m into the then-startup.

The response from the music industry, which has long had mixed feelings about the significant influence Spotify wields over artists, has been swift.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, famous for their anthem Rattlesnake, wrote on Instagram on Saturday: “New demos collection out everywhere except Spotify (frick Spotify)”.

They added: “Spotify CEO Daniel Ek invests millions in Al military drone technology.

Seems pretty stupid honestly. The AI arms race is inevitable. Just like the previous nuclear arms race. I don't care if Spotify CEO is cashing in on it. But King Gizz seems perfectly fine with keeping their music on Apple who makes phones with slave labor in China.

They are also getting way too political, posting shite like "no bigots at our show please" and "free palestine." Maybe they are just starved for attention? I loved their output from 2016 to about 2019, but the rest of their stuff after that has been a bit of a chore to listen to, or forgettable mostly.

free enterprise and open markets. The artists are free to do what they want with their streaming content, for now.

Deny them this at the consumer’s peril…because eventually you’ll wind up with another Ticketmaster

Well...yeah? I don't think they should be required to have their music on spotify. I just think the reason they are removing it is stupid. It's about attention moreso than anything.

Spotify's usage rate just dropped a whopping 0.0001% due to King Gizzard's massive fan exodus

These things are abundantly clear and didn’t need to be said again since they were already said in the first post.

The best was Neil Young pulling his material, that he didn't own, off Spotify because Joe Rogan said something on a podcast about vaccines. Basically, protesting free speech. At least these idiots have a legit argument to make. Whether they are right or will accomplish anything of note is highly suspect.

I'd say that they THINK they have a legit argument, but it's a pretty shallow and shortsighted one. My thoughts on the AI warfare race are pretty simple. China and Russia are going to pursue it no matter what and if you aren't doing everything you can to keep up, then you are fricked. Therefore, if you are for peace, you should actually be for funding AI war tech in peace loving countries, because it is the only thing that will keep some balance of power and peace between all the major players.

Screw these virtue signaling leftist bands. I don’t understand why being artistic and creative has to go hand in hand with progressive politics 90% of the time. Some bands are smart enough to keep their political views to themselves, but these types usually just can’t help themselves.

I get what you are saying but not sure not wanting bigots at your show is political. Seems kinda decent human behavior. Maybe that's asking too much nowadays?

Requires self-regulatiion. Not practical for bigotry which is in the eye of the beholder. All for show.

If you noticed anything about the use of the word bigot over the last 10 years, you’d understand that it almost always used incorrectly and interchangeably with other words like nazi, racist, etc. what they really mean is that they don’t want anyone there that disagrees with their world view.

I love threads like these where people are stunned and shocked that jam bands or or in other cases punk bands shockingly have left wing politics and then get pissy when they start to talk about their beliefs.

I do wonder how those same people feel about people like Kid Rock making his shitty pro Trump music though

I don’t think anyone is shocked. It’s just that everyone’s grown tired of the ‘holier than thou / virtue signaling attitude.
