Lack of Empathy- What is causing it?

I noticed lately that I’m not as empathetic as I once was and want to be and started to question why. So I talked to my therapist about it and it seems to start with social media, I’m not blaming the platform but I’m blaming myself for being too caught up in it. What I tend to see if just a barrage of people that seemingly have a new “problem” everyday and it fatigues me to where when they actually do have something happen to them I don’t care. Or there are people who have “been the victim of” the same circumstance for seemingly years on end. To which I just start to blame the “victim” because of the same thing keeps happening to you caused by different people the only constant is you so it must be a you problem that you fail to address and rather be the victim. Anyway with all that blabbering I’m working on getting back to being the empathetic person I’ve always been because it’s just a happier existence that way. Thanks for attending my TED talk

As entitlement goes up empathy goes down.

because we dont have unlimited good will to people that have proven that they have no interest in improving their own lives.

It really hasn't changed. What has changed is that the younger generation thinks people should give a shite about their feelings. They are shocked when they find out that people don't.

The work from home epidemic that started with Covid has and will continue to ruin society.

People become more pragmatic with age. You start to realize who deserves empathy and who deserves a kick in the arse.

There’s a degree of empathy that gets crossed where it does more harm than good. A moderate amount of empathy works, but too much enables poor choices and behavior.

Social media is re-writing all our brains.
I’ve noticed lately how my attention span seems shorter, and was wondering if watching so many short reel type videos is a factor?

Think a lot of it is geography. I feel like if you live in a large, congested city you automatically hate people a little more. Small towns have more community and compassion IMO.

You are on TD and you have to ask??

I'm a pretty empathetic person

Are you on anti-depressants? Pretty common to lose empathy and emotion. “Empty inside” numbness sets in.
Other than that, I think it’s problem fatigue from being saturated with it because of the information overload caused by social media and internet.

People are highly desensitized to everything now today with what they see on social media

Social media has depersonalized a lot of what society considers important. If it was one point God, family, and friends, now it's Tik Tok famous, Facebook, etc.
I'm 31 years old, and I think the generational gap between my parents and I is less than it is for me and someone who is 17 today. I grew up with dial-up internet, calling on landlines, thinking you were living big if you had basic cable, etc. My childhood was not spent on social media but it was spent outdoors in the woods of Birmingham, Alabama, and swimming in pools, jumping off diving boards, riding bikes, etc.
Kids today have it harder, in my opinion. I imagine the FOMO is much worse if you can so readily see others doing stuff without you if you weren't invited on social media.
Kids don't even watch TV anymore. No new cartoon is going to make it big like Spongebob, Fairly Oddparents, Jimmy Neutron, etc.
I also think we have information overload with X, social media updates at all times, etc. Cable and local news really were the only source of information for a long time; thus, journalists had a greater obligation to their profession than they do now. Being an on-camera news anchor at a place like Lafayette is absolutely no job security. You'll be gladly fired in a heartbeat so they can pay some amateur less who is terrible.

Here's a good example. It's lack of awareness and then screaming because rules were created because of your lack of awareness.
Entitled yes!
