Theories of why outboard wasn’t peeing.

Last time out we take the boat off the trailer and run to our first spot and I couldn’t tell if it was peeing when running at higher speed. I slow down and sure enough it’s not peeing. We never ran shallow or stirred up mud but there was mud in the rubber hose where the water pee outside of the motor.
I hook hose up to engine for about 10 mins after every use.
Any theories on where mud came from?

May need to insert a catheter.

Mud daubers. Had it happen before.

That’s my first thought. I heard of them going into cowling vents and causing some damage. A buddy I know uses a cowling cover in storage for this reason.

Aka weedeater string or heavy leader material

The metal wire in a popping cork saved the day this time.

For sure. I keep a small piece of wire that's the perfect diameter just for this reason. Cleans it out perfectly.

Smear vaseline or dawn around the pee hole and the dirt daubers wont touch it. Had the same issue.

Was having the same exact problem with a Yamaha 4 stroke. The motor would run fine, not overheat, but little to no water would flow out the tell tale.
I took it home, flushed all the water lines, ran weed eater string where i could reach and used compressed air to clear the lines. Still would not improve the flow.
I then took it to a local outboard mechanic. They stated nothing is wrong with it..

quote:Mud dauber. I had this happen to me on the lake when I was test driving a john boat almost 20 years ago. I didn't catch it, and the motor overheated. Me and my buddy swam the boat to shore and checked it out. Sure enough, it was plugged up by a mud dauber nest.

With most outboards, the pisser is just a bleed off of the water jacket to give a visual indication of water pressure in the power head. The vast majority of the water exits through the exhaust, and a plugged pisser will generally not hurt anything.
Also, change your water pumps people. 99.99999% of the time outboard cooling problems are caused by old / worn / broken water pumps. They are meant to be changed annually, and most people don't change them until they get an overheat alarm. In reality they last far longer than that with frequent use in clean water but if you aren't monitoring water pressure, you need to be changing it at least bi-annually if the engine gets used for anything remotely important.

Yep I always carried about a 2’ length of heavy leader in my leaning post just for this. Hang over the transom and run it up in there and it should start pissing

Yall should remind the wife that if you go fishing more you will have fewer engine problems.

God must've been trolling when he made these.
Everything that has an open orifice in my shed will get filled if I don't fill it first. (
All my pressure washer accessories have plugs of aluminum foil poked into the fittings.
If I go take something apart I have to dig out the dirt before I can get the screwdriver down to the screw.
