Billy Joel: And So It Goes (new documentary on HBO)

Part one aired this past weekend and part 2 airs this coming weekend.
Watched Part 1 last night. It's really good. Lots of interviews about some really serious shite (spoilers below for discussion). I learned a lot of things I never knew about BJ.
They go into depth about how long it took him to "make it" and how little money he made initially due to a shite contract he had signed.
Also, I had no idea he tried to kill himself...not once, but twice. Dude took an entire bottle of sleeping pills and went into a coma. Then got out of the hospital and drank a bottle of lemon Pledge. Holy shite.
The best part is that there is a lot of exposition about how a lot of his songs were written. Just explaining the stories or experiences that led to some of the most famous songs in America is really cool to hear about. And Billy seems to be really open and honest about it too.
Part 1 goes through the Glass Houses album. I suspect part 2 will go all the way up through his new single that he released last year, Turn the Lights Back On (which is awesome btw).
Anybody check this one out? If you're a Billy Joel fan, it's great. It's likely interesting even if you aren't a huge fan.

I love a good music documentary, and this one delivered. Some people may complain that the documentary is too long, but I can't get enough of this type of content.
His ex and he explaining their argument after a drunk driving incident, which went word for word into "You May Be Right," gave me a chuckle.

It's amazing how many of his songs are either directly about or inspired by her. And I had no idea she was his manager either. She still is a very pretty lady too.

Agreed.
And FYI to others, each episode is 2.5 hours I believe.
I could watch that dude play piano for hours. I love watching someone who has perfected their craft, like a good piano or drum player. It's mesmerizing to me. And the way he plays some of his songs like they are classical pieces is incredible. There's a small clip of that in the trailer I believe (Uptown Girl).

This is the main reason why I enjoyed The Beatles Get Back movie that Peter Jackson did. Watching them come up with hit songs from just f'ing around with an instrument, or a sound in their head. It's amazing to watch.

This is how i would like to learn about musicians. Not the stupid and inaccurate biopics.

It sucks that this seems to be a common theme with musicians as well as actors.
The Bay City Rollers were really popular in the 70s but, ended up broke because their manage stole all of the money.
I'll definitely watch the Billy Joel Doc. I loved his 70s/80s music.

This is actually one of my favorite artists.

Only the Good Die Young
Probably my favorite song of his.
I had no idea it was banned by the Catholic Church.

one branch of my family tree refused to allow it played in their presence. They hated him for ever writing it.
Didn't have much to do with them past my teen years.
Only the Good Die Young and Piano Man. Easily my 2 favorites.

It's pretty incredible just how talented he is. He's basically a poet in every sense of the word, with world class classical piano training. That's a hell of a combination.
I was thinking about that while watching last night. Just the way he words things is pretty cool. Take Pianoman, for example. Just something as simple as "when i wore a younger man's clothes" is one hell of a way to describe being young. And he does shite like that all the time.
I know he retired from making pop music in 1993 because he said the songwriting process was overbearing, but man he is one of the best to ever do it IMO.

I know musicians and all, but Joel must have an all time genetic lotto to pull the women he did and look like he did... Regardless of the money and talent.
Prime Christy Brinkley is an all time flex, for anyone, let alone a dude who looked like this:

Yep.
And now with Brian Wilson gone he's the greatest living American songwriter.

Had tickets to see him in October, concert was cancelled for health reasons. I hope he is doing okay.

I hadn't seen this or heard about it, thanks for posting, it's awesome. I haven't listened to Joel for a long time, but he was a huge part of my childhood.

Any mention of why he hasn’t updated a We Didn’t Start the Fire? I heard he hated the song but it has to be one of his better songs for content alone.

My beef is with the mix. Specifically the Dialog vs Music levels. I haven't had this with, say Running Down a Dream.
Sometimes the music is front and center. Sometimes to hear it you turn it up but the dialog is way out of balance.
Someone really blew the mix.
The music ought to ROCK but much of the time it's played at "background" levels when there's no need to do so.
Everything else is fine.
