The Main branch and three others —Nix in the Carrollton neighborhood, Keller in Broadmoor and the Children's Resource Center Uptown— closed this month for plumbing, A/C and other repairs, continuing an annual trend of emergency closures that peak in the summertime.

“It’s ridiculous. They shut it down every other week, it feels like,” he said. “Due to HVAC issues, the building cannot stay cool enough to comfortably accommodate library staff or patrons," NOPL announced earlier this month of the downtown Main branch. "We are in touch with our vendor to mitigate the problem." At the Algiers Regional Library, the second floor A/C was out most of last summer, limiting access to the first floor. Patron Sharon Shirey recalled staff’s accommodations to grab books requested from the second floor's adult section, but it was frustrating to not have browsing access. “I'm so sad about the deplorable conditions of our libraries because so many people, especially kids, depend on them,” she said.

"For many of these library locations, we can not go another year making small fixes patching and hoping. The leaking roofs are particularly problematic, causing damage to our buildings our carpets our materials, mold, and to our reputation in the community," she said then.

Is maintenance never included in the budget for public places?

Vacationing around the world is expensive.

If they are gonna keep taking the low bid on things and not actually fix them, this will keep happening.
That’s how the government does though

There's a line from Chris Rock I could post here, but I don't want to get banned.

Like a hotel during Essence Festival, they close in the summer because some use them as their air conditioning playpen.

Sad but true. I’d love to see a study of kids that regular went to a public library and their outcomes. My assumption is households that go to libraries with their kids produce more successful kids.
The true parenting hack is live within walking distance to a playground, a library, and a grocery store. You don’t need much more than that.

This is what happens when retarded people take over running public facilities.

Expecting multiple media sources to begin circulating stories that blame the Trump budget cuts for these closures.

The one in my neighborhood is in great shape. But I live in Lakeview.

I'm surprised to hear New Orleans still has libraries.

Our little town has a public library and the only patrons sit outside in their vehicles using the free wifi.
