the end of an era

it's official the era of the late night talk show is over, it's dead as a stump. it's as over as the era of variety shows. the cancellation of cobert was just the beginning.
the three night time talk shows had combined audience of 5.36 million viewers the problem is of that 5.36 million less than 600k were under the age of 50. think about that 4.8 million of those views are over 50, that's a demographic that doesn't attract advertisers thus their revenues have fallen dramatically. coberts show lost 40 million last year off a budget of 100 million dollars. he's the best of the bunch if anything his politics helped him of his 2.4 million viewers only 219k are under the age of 50. fallon is the worst 1.19 million viewers 157k are under the age of 50 so as a percentage fallon's audience while smaller skews younger.
when CBS cancelled the show they announced there wouldn't be a replacement that they're bandoning the concept of late night talk it's only a matter of time before ABC and NBC follows suite.

It’s been dead for a long time.
Cable killed broadcast everything.
And streaming is killing cable.

Explain the popularity of Gutfeld then.

Something has to be on that time slot. Unless they're planning to go back to signing off the air.

gutfeld had 3.29 million viewers 238k in the 18-49 demo against a next to nothing production cost he has 8 total staffers. gutfeld isn't a tradition talk show nor is it in a traditional talk show time slot.

yeah something will be but it won't be a talk show
CBS tried the merv griffin show from 69 to 72 and the pat sejak show 1989-90 ABC tried various shows joey bishop dick cavet but mainly the stayed out of late night due to johnny carson.
the most watched of the three shows was cobert and CBS canceled it what possible reason does ABC have to keep kimmel or NBC to keep fallon.

When Letterman left NBC for CBS. He got angry, bitter, and got overly political, if I remember correctly. And he was copied by everyone from sportscasters to his fellow hosts. Before that, his NBC show was unbelievably funny and creative. That fresh, young show coming after the king, Carson, was gold.

If my company lost over 40 million a year plus cost 100 million to make a year. I don't think I would be in business anymore

Plus he doesn't have the 300 million people who have CBS. He only has like 30 million people who catch fox news which makes it even more impressive.

gutfeld beat's "law and order" thursday night in the 10pm time slot with nearly double the number of viewers
that's impressive. or it's sad if your "law and order"

They can blame themselves for constantly talking politics. Kimmel has been a bitch fest for ten years.
Plus no one is allowed to be funny anymore.
Let them burn themselves down. I’ll watch that.

This is key right here and people need to understand this when they bring up Gutfeld's ratings. Yeah, he's winning overall but with less than 250,000 viewers in the key demographic, he's just as in trouble as the rest of them. Fox News viewers skew older. Older people eventually pass on into the next world.

Yea had nothing to do with him being an insufferable uninteresting douchebag.

The appeal used to be late night shows were about the only place you could see celebrity interviews. Now we’re over saturated with celebrities and they’re all over the place. Plus we learned that the less we hear of actors from our favorite movies the better.
Carson was the GOAT and Letterman took the same concept but mixed it with really funny bits. It’s been going downhill ever since.

And spend less money on things, meaning advertisers aren’t terribly interested in their numbers unless they cater to that specific demographic.

The writing has been on the wall for a long time now. People stream what they want to see. In my house (normal family of 4 w kids), the only thing we watch live are sports. That’s the norm.
Their best bet is to just do like Comedy Central and play reruns of Seinfeld and The Office once they get past local news.
