Let’s discuss the French Revolution, please

I’m not very well versed in the topic, to be honest. So I’d like some more educated folks around here, of which there are many, to perhaps inform me on the French Revolution.
Where did it go so wrong? How were the American Revolution and the U.S. Civil War so much more I guess organized is a good way to put it. Now, that is not me saying that the American wars weren’t brutal affairs. But the French Revolution seems almost like a whole lot of stupidity went on until Napoleon stabilized it.
I guess the French (and Russian for that matter) Revolution is what happens when the mob takes over would be the easiest way to put it? And in the American Revolution, the mob didn’t and that’s where the difference truly lies. I can also see the difference between the two due to the nature in which they broke out. The colonists were thousands of miles away from their king and were essentially already governing themselves.
The French Revolution seems like an 18th century version of Idiocracy.

If you like podcasts Mike
duncan has a very long one about revolutions in general and a logn segment of it is about the French Revolution.
Mike is super liberal, but he doesn’t pull punches on The Jacobins and reign of Terror and i think is fairly sympathetic to Louis

french debt to gdp was 160%. louis had to call the estates general into being for the first time in over a century. 1st/2nd estates of the clergy and rich voted against the 3rd estate 90% of population, each time and imposed more taxes. 3rd estate with some 1st and 2nd estate support breaks off, forms their own assembly with the tennis court oath. skip skip skip french revolution goes radical with robespierre who kills the king and queen skip skip skip robespierre gets too radical gets killed skip skip skip napoleon takes over and france ends up with a monarchy again skip skip skip napoleon loses at waterloo and the conservatives take back over with a bourbon monarchy. so the people who were in charge before the revolution were in charge at the end. Congress of Vienna gives us modern diplomacy and we have european peace for a century until wwi.

The better comparison would be the October Revolution. It wasn't about breaking away or establishing dominance over a polity, it was about the wholesale overthrow and rejection of the previous regime.
They got caught in a holiness spiral that became increasingly radical and destabilizing - even Napoleon had to appeal to the previous decades' new mythos to gain and retain power.

Revolutions are no time to go losing your head and that’s exactly what the French did. That’s where it went wrong. And they wouldn’t let them eat cake.

what’s interesting about it is it seems to the the dividing line between classical liberal revolutions and socialist revolutions

The French Revolution is a morality tale that should serve as a warning to all movements to beware of allowing the lunatics to run the asylum. It can be argued that France never quite recovered from the events of the 1790s.

That is what happens when you allow the Committee for Public Safety to run the government.
Government bureaucracies always are misnamed and make things worse.

it was the attempt to extend the rights of man granted to them by God, without including God
that's why it failed
that's why it failed

Is it true that basically only the poors paid taxes in France at that time?.
Posted on 7/17/25 at 7:16 pm to grizzlylongcut
Yes. Church and nobility paid next to nothing

I mean you can go back to the book of Judges
The Magna Carta
The English Civil War
The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution
I'll use the moral authority and absolutism of God, the French Revolution tried using men and Freemasonry
Which glorified the building of the pyramids by the Egyptians which enslaved the Jewish people
it was flawed from the beginning

Couldn’t imagine why the poors were pissed.

Well, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair …
