Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3

Let’s get it started… first two episodes of season three dropped this morning. I’m going to stay spoiler free for a bit.
One episode is heavy, the other light.
I prefer the heavier one, but the lighter one was needed, I think.
I’m just happy to see the show return. Let’s see what happens.

I’ll be watching this afternoon, I’ve been looking forward to the new season.
Without spoiling anything I’ll say the first episode was great.

The 2 year cliffhanger still pisses me off.
With that out of the way, the two episodes were prettt good, but not quite great. I appreciated the callback to a TOS episode The Squire of Gothos….and even the Twilight Zone. I could nit pick some other things but don’t want to provide too many spoilers

I really like what the Gorn are now compared to what they were in TOS.

I didn't catch on to that until almost the end. The way he was dressed should have tipped me off but I missed it until the parents showed up

I believe i am picking up what you are putting down. None of this feels like star trek to me. The casual, contemporary way they speak to one another is not how star trek has been. The constant flirting and romance rather than actually exploring things is not how star trek has been.
Spock better dive into emotionless logic from this "heartbreak."

This happened at least once in TOS. "The Enemy Within" where there are two Kirks, Sulu and a landing party were stranded on a freezing planet due to the transporter being out. They seemed to forget they had shuttlecraft
On second thought, I don't think the shuttlecraft had been introduced yet at the time of that episode so they may have not conceived of it yet

What irked me was that they made a big deal in the first season about M’Benga’s terminally ill daughter being held in the transporter buffer for a very long time until he could find a cure. They kept bringing that up in multiple episodes. And in the episode where it flashed back to Chapel and M’Benga being “Captain America super soldiers”, we saw the same approach being used to hold critically wounded patients.
But then, in this episode, they have a patient that needs to be operated on within a day or they’ll die, and Chapel never thinks “let’s put them in the buffer and deal with it later?” They could have thrown in a single line to explain it away, but they didn’t. I don’t expect a lot out of a show, but some internal consistency would be nice.
I did like the episode, despite its flaws. The second episode, though: ooof.

The entire buffer can of worms was opened with Scotty's appearance on DS9. The problem is that there's a lack of drama if every critical patient can be saved in a buffer (given they have the power available to maintain it). I can see why they didn't want to go back to it, again and again. I don't think they should've brought it back for M'Benga's kid.

TNG, not DS9 - the episode was "Relics"
Originally LaForge was amazed someone did what he did. I can only presume the engineering miracle for Scotty now is the length of time as well as doing on a ship that was badly damaged.
Still, though, there are a lot of episodes in TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY where keeping someone critically wounded or suffering from a terminal illness in the buffer would have been a potential solution.
The transporter is basically magic that writers will hope you forgot can be used to fix nearly any medical issue. It has made artificially aged people young again, de-aged people their correct age, etc.

Here’s what I thought about each episode:
I was pretty satisfied with the first episode. I do agree with one of the earlier posters… it would have been okay to let Ortegas go. I don’t dislike her character or anything, but if you have a chance to make a great dramatic moment… take it.
As for the second episode… I said it was needed because the previous episode had people getting digested from the outside and the inside out… maybe a change of pace?
But… I typically don’t like SNW’s dedication to exploring interpersonal relationships when I would prefer they get out and explore uncharted space. They seem to spend a lot of time docked. And I don’t like deus ex machina endings either.
Overall, I’m happy, though. More La’An.
