They left out the part where he did a shout out to a WNBA player in the audience, people cheered, then he confessed that she wasn't in the WNBA and he just did it to prove that no one watches the WNBA.

That was pure gold. Love that he honored the late Norm Macdonald

was the audience just that uptight? or just too stupid to get the references?

Thats just his humor. It does make some people uncomfortable and in that crowd even more so. No one really knows if they are supposed to laugh. Thats what really makes it comedy gold.

The fact that Matt is married to a black (she’s lovely, not making any other commentary) lady and it worked for that joke is amazing.

Matt is likely the one that wrote that joke. Shane was talking about pulling in all sorts of other people to help him write it on thier podcast prior to the show

Athletes at the ESPYs have always been the most self-serious award show crowd, which is why what Gillis did is so pleasing to so many.

He seemed nervous. I understand his comedy is already a bit awkward, but he had to keep questioning the audience on feedback, that’s a classic “I’m uncomfortable up here” tactic

A few jokes absolutely landed though.

He acted that way on SNL recently as well. I think that’s just his normal demeanor.
