Americans didn’t really eat either item for breakfast before the 1920’s.

quote:

In the 1920s, Bernays was approached by the Beech-Nut Packing Company – producers of everything from pork products to the nostalgic Beech-Nut bubble gum. Beech-Nut wanted to increase consumer demand for bacon. Bernays turned to his agency’s internal doctor and asked him whether a heavier breakfast might be more beneficial for the American public. Knowing which way his bread was buttered, the doctor confirmed Bernays suspicion and wrote to five thousand of his doctors friends asking them to confirm it as well. This ‘study’ of doctors encouraging the American public to eat a heavier breakfast – namely ‘Bacon and Eggs’ – was published in major newspapers and magazines of the time to great success. Beech-Nut’s profits rose sharply thanks to Bernays and his team of medical professionals.

quote:

Edward Louis Bernays (/b??r'ne?z/ bur-NAYZ; German: [b??'na?s]; November 22, 1891 - March 9, 1995) was an American pioneer in the field of public relations and propaganda, referred to in his obituary as "the father of public relations".[3]

quote:

Edward Bernays was born in Vienna to a Jewish family.[13] His mother, Anna (1858–1955), was Sigmund Freud's sister, and his father Eli (1860–1921) was the brother of Freud's wife, Martha Bernays; their grandfather, Isaac Bernays (through their father Berman), was the chief rabbi of Hamburg and a relative of the poet Heinrich Heine.[14][15]

What choices did they have if they relied on themselves for their food?

I'd like to spit some Beech-Nut in that dudes eyes and shoot him with my old 45, cause a country boy can survive.

Jews were pushing bacon?

Interesting!

Yes, our food pyramids, RDAs and all the fads are driven by those wishing to promote one thing over another for profit - it sucks.

"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" was all marketing to get people to buy cereal as well.

I'm thankful. Without it, we might be eating something gay.

My understanding is a lot of oatmeal or bread. I assume grits in the South.

FWIW, my grandparents and their parents before them raised hogs and chickens well before 1929. Their main protein and fat sources—including for breakfast— without influence by “a company.”

Well God bless them, because I feel like I could eat 2 eggs over easy, 3 strips of bacon, grits and a piece of toast every morning for the rest of my life.

Things that could be stored without refrigeration?

The refrigerator was invented in 1922 so it makes sense.

Then why must we spend 3 years salary on engagement rings?

I would imagine before commercial media and advertising there really wasn’t any “this is a breakfast/dinner/supper food”

You ate what you had with the resources you had

So am I. Bacon and eggs is a great high protein, low carb breakfast.
