What happened to music videos?

Music videos used to tell the song's story, but lately, they show the artists singing on a set or in the studio. With the death of MTV and VH1, do artists no longer produce watchable music videos?

I see plenty of new traditional music videos today. It's just that we've moved away from watching channels that show music videos all the time.

I was watching YouTube while I was working out at home. It seems that every new song has a guy on a stool in a recording studio at their concert, while many of the older ones tell the song's story.

The same thing that happened to record sales, streaming.

I still watch music videos on YouTube. I also watch a lot of concerts sometimes even live. There’s as much music video content coming now as there’s ever been…probably even more.

Yeah, but finding it requires a little effort...which is more than most of the general populace can muster.

Plenty of traditional-ly music videos on social media. The streaming age has disrupted the monetary stream in the industry, though, so promotional budgets are a fraction of what they were.

Bring Me The Horizon has put out some absolute bangers of music videos the last few years.

There were tons of performance/faux performance videos back in the day, but otherwise, I feel your pain.
Music is mostly astro-turfed and pre-fab now. There was always an element of that back in the day, but because the didn't have the tools to conceal/overwrite lack of talent, what happened through the 90s and early 00s was that there was a filter or funnel and the (I'm not going to say best here) folks with talent and the right style for the time would rise to the top, generally. Now it is all pre-selected and homogenized because most hit pop songs are written by the same group of 40 or so professional songwriters. The suits just pick who gets to record them.
Legacy acts are just doing updated live versions of videos. It is somewhat interesting that some legacy acts are having videos made of older songs that didn't get them (e.g. Elton John's Tiny Dancer in 2017, Pink Floyd DSOM just last year for the 50th anniversary).
It is a fertile ground for filmmakers if the licensing issues can be dealt with.

I usually get down voted for posting his stuff, but The Weeknd always puts out cool videos. Many cinematic influences in all his music.

There's this fresh new format now called YouTube.

Artists don’t have the budget to make videos like the record companies used to pay for. It’s all DIY now.
Just out of curiosity I looked it up and the video for Estranged by GnR cost $4,000,000

You can shoot film quality stuff on your phone nowadays. If you want to fly helicopters around and blow shite up, that still costs money.

They had to kill Headbangers Ball to destroy white suburban culture.

There's way, way more. You can find multiple concerts, videos, interviews, documentaries etc on almost any artist.

Even in its heyday, there were basic types of videos on MTV - the performance video, the concept/story video, and some dance videos. Occasionally you'd get something weird/different.
