Louisiana residents can now use Louisiana Wallet at TSA security checkpoints, federal buildings, and courthouses nationwide. According to the office of Gov. Jeff Landry, LA Wallet can be presented for the next three years after meeting federal requirements. The digital wallet app will be reviewed again by the Transportation and Security Administration in 2028.

This is not to say the digital ID in LA wallet does not have to be a real ID

Yet, when I tried to use it as ID to buy beer at Whole Foods a few weeks ago, the clerk said they don't take it. I noted that I could use it to board a flight, so surely it was good enough to get a 6-pack of beer.
A manager finally approved the sale, but it was enough of a hassle that I don't buy alcohol there anymore unless I have my physical ID, which I often do not carry.

Some casinos either.
Caesar’s in New Orleans ID checks everyone going in and you need the physical DL. And it is not just show the guard to make sure it is real, they also scan it run it in their database, but I guess they make sure you are not on a list of banned patrons or on a self exclusion list.
Treasure Chest just checks for possible underage individuals, but there are signs about no LA wallet.

A REAL ID will still be needed to board a flight or enter federal buildings. Enforcement of REAL ID began on May 7.
So you can get past security but not board?
Is this poorly written or did I wake up 15 minutes ago?

LA Wallet shows if it’s a RealID.

Also some banks won’t accept it.
Not because of federal or state policy, but because of the bank’s policy

This is great news. Please let TSA at MSY know. I flew out of New Orleans back in late June and they told me they didn’t accept it. I had to dig my drivers license out of my wallet.

I don't remember ever having to show my ID to board a plane? All I've ever shown to board is my boarding pass. I show my ID at security.

quote:I think this just means that you can use LA Wallet but you still have to have the "Real ID" designation to use your state ID to fly. Some people might think that because they can use LA Wallet they don't need to go through the "Real ID" process. They could have written it in a better way.

That will end up being another data breach
Posted on 7/15/25 at 7:53 am to LSUTANGERINE
Does this mean that once again you don't need a REAL ID to fly?

You can scan an LA Wallet ID, so that's not really a legit reason to not accept it

Banks still will not accept it.

"Its different from the way we've always done it."
That's reason enough here.

REAL ID can be on LA wallet

If a red star on the license is still needed, then the press release was poorly written, or, more likely, intentionally misstated so the Little General could crow about something that’s largely meaningless, particularly with the mensas working for the TSA at MSY.

All Louisiana businesses are mandated to take LA Wallet except: casinos, racing commission, insurance providers, notaries, used car dealers, and federally insured depository institutions

"The only exceptions are casinos because there are federal guidelines, and banking because there are some banking regulations that require you to use your physical license," he said.
According to the LA Wallet website, exceptions include casinos, racing commission, insurance providers, notaries, used car dealers, and federally insured depository institutions.
"Outside of that all businesses are mandated to accept LA Wallet," James added.
If users run into issues, they should contact the Alcohol, Tobacco, Commission.
"If I continue to hear about businesses are not, maybe we do need to look into penalties and a mechanism to report," James said.

Are the businesses mandated to take the LA Wallet set up to validate what’s on the screen is actually official and coming from the official LA Wallet? Is it using an existing process that most of them have already for payments or are they forcing businesses to add a service to do this?
Surely they aren’t just supposed to only look at the screen without a scan or use near field communication to validate the ID.
