I'm going to move my post from that thread over to here:

I went out of my way to post in this thread as I'm not a movie junkie. I wouldn't know what makes for good plot devices, character arcs, themes, narratives, or musical scores. Having said that, this is one of the best super hero movies I've seen in a really long time and I think that's the point... someone like me who doesn't go into a movie with a critical eye enjoyed the hell out of this movie. I might even go a 2nd time to see it.

I think the people that didn’t grow up with Superman and who are not familiar with the lore will like this movie. I think people who were fans of the original movies will think this one was a poor representation of what Superman is. I fall into the 2nd category.

Stupid, horrendous take

Just because there is one interpretation of Superman from 1978 doesn’t mean that is Superman forever

Thought the movie was fantastic. As a big marvel fan, this blew anything they have put out for quite some time. Don’t care for his parents twist but everything else was excellent

I didn’t either but they left room for that to be debunked later (misunderstood translation)

Didn’t love the portrayal of the Kents as such hicks. They should have dialed it back from Costner and Diane Lane (Hollywood types) but took it too far the other direction.

Jor-el and Lara's message to their son was nothing like what's been presented in any previous Superman movie or comic I've ever read. I wonder why Gunn felt the need to go that route.

I think it was altered and that may resolve in the next movie.

Altered by whom? It reminded me of the scene in "Brightburn" where Brandon finds his ship hidden in the barn and the message tells him to "take the world."

Gunn originally never wanted to do Superman. But said he decided to do it because he found an “out”. That out might be to make Superman’s dad an a-hole. Just like he did for GotG 2 with Star Lord. Maybe Gunn hates good dad role models and was able to do his thing with this. He also made his Kansas parents dumb hicks apparently. Gunn clearly has daddy issues.

Jorel has been a villain in some adaptations before. Just never in a Superman live action movie. In Justice League Gods and Monsters he has a similar motivation as this movie I believe.

ETA: Apologies, it was My Adventures with Superman animated series. Also in the Smallville tv show he’s somewhat of a villain. And some have pointed out Brightburn. Which isn’t Superman technically, but obviously based on him. And Gunn had some hands in that.

Ended up liking that a lot more than I thought I would. 10x better than BvS and JL. Post credit scenes were pretty disappointing tho…

I really enjoyed this movie, but I was not expecting them to re-use a plot point from Superman IV (cloning Superman from one of his hairs).

The only things I didn’t like (as others have said) were the portrayal of Jonathan and Martha Kent as county bumpkins, and the rest of the message from Jor-El and Lara (which hopefully gets retconned).

Otherwise, I thought it was a solid movie.

The only thing that really made them “country bumpkins” was their accent, though. Jonathan had good wisdom for Clark. Martha seemed to know what was going on. Their accents were mid-South, not Kansas, though.

It was really good. I had low expectations, but I was really surprised and enjoyed it a great deal.

There’s a lot I really liked about this movie. And a few things I didn’t like.

To start with the good. I loved Super Dog. My dog is much sweeter and nicer but Super Dog reminded me of a white haired version of her.

I thought Superman was very heroic. He was rocksteady in determination and I liked to watch him do heroic things.

While k have some issues with the plot, I liked how multifaceted it was.

Nicholas Hoult as always is amazing.

I liked all the super hero stuff was already out in the open.

I don’t know much about comics but I damn loved the Justice League cartoon so some of the early justice league stuff tickled me. Disappointed in no Martian Manhunter to my knowledge (severely underrated dude in my opinion).

I like they had the balls to kill that guy

Ok, onto the negative. At a certain point, when all the CGI noise was happening on the screen in the last third of the movie, I just kinda started shaking my head. Tooo much CGI fake arse stuff. Too much. I started feeling bad watching the movie. I thought several times…. I’m an adult, what the frick am I doing with my life that I’m watching bad cgi of men punching each other.

I loathed the action scene in the pocket universe. That was exceptionally horrible. That baby is beyond dead, especially at the end when he’s holding the baby out and away from his body.

Over all, I thought the pocket universe thing was just kinda exhausting.

I also got sick of seeing phones in this movie. I know that sounds odd and a part of it is valid to the plot but the entire time I just was annoyed with the stupid people on their phone.

Oh yeah, they have the rights to one of the most iconic scores of all time and that’s what you do with it. I kept waiting for the full orchestra to boom it. Instead we got teases and hints of it. Utter bullshite

Okay...

It was good (B-), but not great.

Overloaded and messy/convoluted plot. There are A, A.1, B, B.1, C and C.1 stories. Some good, some not so good.

There's a great movie in there if you get rid of the extraneous stuff.

Too much Gunn humor - not opposed to it, just a little too much and misplaced at times.

Casting was solid. No misses.

Didn't care with some of how Lex was portrayed, although Hoult did a good job with what he had.

Lots of Superman hero stuff. The reveal of Ultraman was given away early on.

Justice Gang underutilized. Wish there was more.

Too much Krypto

Pretty good movie. Batman is going to struggle in this universe.

And maybe Gunn is just a dick.
