We were in Colorado last week and I was struck by what is now an enormous disparity in wealth between the US and the UK.

Spent a couple of nights in a cabin in an RV park - it had pools, slides, mini golf etc, fun for the kids.

But the place was packed with RVs worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Not only that, but it’s clearly a conservative form of vacation, so the average car on site was a pickup truck. These were almost universally less than a couple of years old, and worth at least $60-80k, if not more.

I could drive you to the poshest place in Northern Ireland and though you’d see the occasional high end vehicle, the average car there would probably cost half as much as these.

And then I was talking to someone and they said: “Yeah, this is the most typical middle class American summer getaway.”

Middle class.

Our economies used to be roughly on a par when it comes to GDP per capita. And now the American middle class lives at a level than puts the UK upper classes to shame.

Sad times for us.

It should be a point of national pride how much wealthier we are than Eurotrash

Mississippi, if it were a nation within the EU, would be 2nd wealthiest behind Norway

A peak behind the curtain would reveal severe credit debt.

It's just money.

They have some benefits that we don't as well.

Besides, let's see how they feel after visiting a few rougher hoods in Denver. Doubt it would be as rosy of a picture then.

IDK, my uncle lived in the UK for a couple of years in the seventies helping start up a chemical plant. I remember him talking then about the lower standard of living over there. The houses were smaller, Groceries were smaller portions for the same price, etc.

England has been actively shooting itself in the foot since the days of Thatcher.

The big cultural difference this underlines:

Europeans erroneously assume someone driving a 100k RV isn't wading up to their neck in debt to do it.

Do Europeans not have access to credit like Americans do? Do they simply save more than we do? Or do Americans make significantly more than the middle class British person?

Who would have thought “tax and redistribute” would bring everyone done and not elevate everyone up……

It’s easy to look rich when everything is financed for 84 months and then throw credit card debt on top of it.

But the liberal white women say the minorities here are super oppressed and white people need to pay reparations.

England emerged from WWII deeply in debt and went headlong into socialism, nationalizing several key industries. It proved to be a failure and their attempts to return to the free market did not mean economic freedom and prosperity like in the US. Even earlier, British royalty and upper classes were amazed at wealthy American industrialists of the late 19th and early 20th Century. We surpassed them a long time ago. Canada is also experiencing a similar result of dissimilar economic policies. If we allow socialists here to gain a real foothold, expect the same.

Much of our “wealth” is an illusion based on crushing debt. But that aside, Americans have had a better standard of living at least since the early 20th century. That was a point of jealousy in WWII when American troops would “steal our women.” , as American GI’s had more money to spend and take the English lasses out on what the locals considered extravagant dates. And back when I was in college, a Brit history prof was brought in as a guest speaker, and we took some time to discuss cultural stereotypes we had about each other. Britprof made a point of letting us know that “British students think you're all rich”.

Yeah, maybe that’s because the UK can’t print money out of thin air like us.

Thatcher? Clement Attlee began a Soviet-lite economic program in 1945. Thatcher was s brief attempt to reverse that damage. And now she’s reviled for it. They’re preparing to re-nationalize some industries, reversing some of Thatcher’s reforms, starting with the railways.

Robbers Cave State Park in OK, has hiking, horse riding, a pool, archery, as store, and much more. The cave is disappointing though.
