Years ago went on “meat haul” fishing trip out of shell beach. Guide was cheap but now wants $500 a head to for 2 people. Seems expensive. Anyone know of any cheaper guides? We went in late February.

Man before we know it it'll be $500 for a gaftop trip in catfish lake.

Would also like to know the going rate in that area. Last time I went I think it was $700 for up to 3 fishermen, but it’s been a while.

The Sheepshead meat haul in Black Bay and Bay Eloi will be in Feb, March, and maybe the first half of April.
They spawn around those rigs in 20-30 feet of water. On a calm day you can go out there in a flat boat and wear them out. You don't need a guide. I don't think there is a limit.

Guide trying to make a living. Don't throw shade on that. Get you a boat and find them fish yourself.

I think I'll start a guided gaftop service.

go put in at Kenner boat launch or Mandeville. Bring a garden hoe and scrape the barnacles on the causeway concrete supports, send a dead shrimp down and hold on
you don’t need a guide to catch bay snapper

I'd gladly pay that rate if they cleaned all the sheepshead too. Probably one of my favorite fish but they are a pain in the arse to clean.

Akshully if you don’t try to cut through the ribs and they’re dead it not that bad.
The dorsal fins can be tricky if you are not paying attention.
Goats need to be 5#’s or better to get any meat but it’s clean meat.

cut from the tail end like you do a triggerfish.
when you hit ribs, go around them and then cut the filet loose at the head. Easy

Exactly this.
And $500 for a charter trip is a steal at the moment. Most are $750-$1,000.

also, there will be a good bit of meat left on the heads and ribs. Clean them good and put in a cheesecloth bag, and simmer in heavily seasoned crab boil water for about 10 minutes
you’ll have mock crabmeat that is tasty and basically free

Look on fishingbooker.com and you might find something cheap enough for you.

Make a road trip to Charleston in the wintertime and for $450 plus tip any guide with a bay boat is in the slow season and will take you out to a nearshore reef where you can catch them all day with fiddler crabs. Preferably not on a weekend when the reefs can get crowded. That $450 is for up to 4 people on most boats, they don't charge by the head.

Exactly how I do it. Learned that years ago and quit throwing sheepshead back.
