“Marijuana is not harmless. The opposite is true and the evidence keeps growing“

Not my title. Just the title of the article.

As drug advocates pushed marijuana legalization over the last 15 years, they portrayed the drug as harmless, a mild intoxicant with few side effects. Cannabis – the term scientists prefer for marijuana – might even have medicinal value, advocates said.
Even in states, from Maine to California, that have legalized cannabis, researchers have published paper after paper showing its risks, particularly to heavy or daily users. I do not mean the munchies or falling asleep on the couch. Powerful evidence links the drug to heart attacks, strokes, severe mental illness, and even suicides.
Cannabis and its active ingredient, the chemical called THC, are toxic to the heart and brain. They are also much more addictive than many users realize. Though cannabis does not cause the physical dependence of alcohol, it can make users psychologically dependent, leading to irritability, depression, and mood swings if they cut back. And a huge new study shows that legalization is linked to a sharp increase in diagnoses of cannabis addiction.
But just as it took decades for the public to realize the cancer risks of cigarettes, the health harms of cannabis are not completely understood. A majority of Americans still favor legalization – a fact that makes the emerging science even more alarming.

Yea - and everything else is going to kill you at some point too.

I don't think anyone (with a brain) disagrees. The argument has always been that it is no worst than alcohol

No, no, no.
The cool, edgy types on here assured me doctors, engineers and lawyers all smoke up on their way to getting another tasteful tattoo that denotes their professionalism.

I think they legalized it to keep people high and happy or drowsy so that they can do as they wish with no care.

They don't think that maybe the people with these conditions are using weed as a relief for them instead of pharmaceuticals?
I.e. weed isnt the cause, it's the effect of these conditions.

I’d like them to do a study of the thc content in marijuana today vs even like 20 yrs ago.
The pot today is SUPER potent. I’m sure there are more risks involved with higher thc content.

People on here will not like this.
People will argue the “what about alcohol” stance, which makes sense, if people were using both at the same rate.
People know that daily alcohol use is bad for you.
For some reason, people act like daily marijuana use is perfectly fine.
It has negatives.
Making it illegal isn’t the path, but chronic, especially daily use, should be publicly treated the same way we treat alcoholism and cigarettes.

That's my attitude as well. It's why I have no problem pouring bleach into my ears and driving 100mph on a rainy day without my seatbelt. I mean, I'm gonna die from something one day, right?

No one said it’s harmless.

The THC content of modern marijuana is multiple times higher than in the past.
In the 70s, it was around 3%.
Now, it is around 20-23%.

It was ironic that some (not all) who pushed so hard for legalization were the same ones who pushed to ban tobacco products.
They are all vices. None of them are 100% safe. And yes, more studies are needed.
They keep pointing out THC as the issue, but is it really the smoke inhalation combined with the THC? Is the THC in a drink or gummy=joint in terms of health risk?

Not much difference in effects of smoking that I could tell. It just takes fewer hits to get you wasted. Edibles on the other hand..... I ate a piece of a 1000 mg chocolate bar from Oklahoma once. I forgot how to breathe. I could see someone flipping out and thinking they were dying and having an anxiety attack from that.
AS far as it being addicting, I have smoked heavy for most of 30 years. Stopped multiple times with no problem. Not smoking currently as I am in a safety sensitive job, but it has no negative effect on me. I either smoke or I don't. Simple as that.
