Atlanta Braves Player Contract Status

Austin Riley signed a 10-year, $212 million contract extension with the Atlanta Braves in August 2022. The deal, which is the largest in Braves history, includes a $20 million club option for the 2033 season. Riley will earn $15 million in 2023, $21 million in 2024, and $22 million per year from 2025 through 2032. The contract also includes a donation of $2.12 million to the Atlanta Braves Foundation.
Looks like Braves fans have to watch his production, or lack thereof, for at least 7 more seasons after this one. I cannot see a club option being picked up in 2033
Michael Harris II is under contract with the Atlanta Braves for eight years, worth $72 million, through the 2030 season. The contract includes two club options, one for 2031 and another for 2032, which could extend the deal to a total of 10 years.
Another one Braves fans have to tolerate. Best case scenario he turns it around
Finally, Sean Murphy is under contract with the Atlanta Braves through the 2028 season with a club option for 2029. He signed a six-year, $73 million extension with the Braves in December 2022, which also includes a $15 million club option for 2029 with no buyout.
Do you think any other Major League team would ever entertain taking on these contracts? We will never be able to trade these 3 for anything of value.....WE BRAVES FANS ARE STUCK WITH THEM
We could fire the dumbass that allowed this to happen, but I don't know who the fierer would be. Who is in charge?

We are probably due a strike before then so $20m might be a good deal even if he is bad

Do other large market teams have bad contracts like this?

Possibly. I don't know. I don't really care. I am a longtime Braves fans and am only worried about that team's contracts

Probably not, unless the Braves were sweeting the deal by including some good young prospects in exchange for another team taking on a bad contract.

Maybe a new CBA will get rid of these stupid 10 year contracts that always seem to backfire on the team. And allowing teams to defer salary years down the road.

They can and should trade Murphy either in July or this winter. Might have to kick in a little money and probably won’t get much but it would clear up some payroll and let Baldwin get more regular time behind the plate

It makes a difference.
If it's unique to the Braves they have to fix the front office. If it's across the board it's just the cost of doing business.

And I loved how the sports media at the time referred to all those deals as "team friendly"
What a bunch of garbage. Its always a gamble when signing young players before their option.Sometimes it pays off and other times it blows up in your face.
Harris and Albies are a perfect example.

Or maybe you guys can shore up that pitching rotation by snagging a 3 4 or 5th day starter and an up and coming minor leaguer. That's a bad contract in a few years.
Move acuna jr to center
Fairchild starts in right

Everybody thought all of those contracts were a good idea.

They built a lineup full of mashers and the balls were juiced in 2023. Last year and early this year, they were still hitting the ball really hard but the slightly deadened baseballs killed a lot of fly balls at the warning track. Now they're trying to adjust to the deadened balls by doing things they aren't good at doing, and we're seeing the results.
Additionally, they have never recovered from arguably the most epic choke job in franchise history (2023 NLDS), which says a lot considering all of the choking in the 90s. The Phillies took their manhood in that series and they cowered like little bitches.
It's a roster full of mental midgets. Austin Riley is 15 miles deep in his own head and has been for more than a year.

They also could have been on the hook for $160 million to Dansby Swanson but got outbid.
Although his decline over the past two seasons hasn't been quite as bad.

I thought there was evidence that they were all sitting on certain pitches and the Phillies figured it out and it’s been downhill since

The Acuna deal was a “steal” for the team when it was signed. Barring injuries, it would likely be one of the greatest “team” contracts within the last decade. If he is able to fully recover (appears he is doing well) and stay healthy, it’s still a great contract for ATL.

The Harris contract is atrocious. They should have waited another year to see if he could sustain for longer than one season, lol. He's still young and has time to figure it out.
Riley has bad slumps for extended periods of time. I'm confident he will come out of it and get back to being a top 5-7 3B in the Show.
And while I don't particularly like Murphy, $12mm a year for a catcher that is top 5 in OPS and homers in the league while only playing about half the games in the season is pretty strong. He's never been a high average hitter and the Braves knew that before trading for him. It hurt last year when two of the guys the braves gave up (Contreras and Langeliers) had significantly better seasons while Murphy was atrocious. Those two have come back to earth this year and are performing in line with Murphy's current output. You need two catchers in the MLB and having a guy like this on a $12MM AAV deal isn't necessarily going to hamstring the payroll.
The bigger issues for the Braves this year in my opinion has been Profar screwing up and forcing the team to play no name guys like Fairchild, White, and Verdugo. White and Verdugo have been serviceable, but should not be every day players on a roster that is supposed to contend in the playoffs. Albies has been dreadful at the plate and probably won't be seeing another contract from the Braves. Acuna missing the first few months of the season. Lopez blowing his elbow out in the first month. Not having a closer anymore. And doing nothing to shore up the SS position in the offseason....

Max Fried is under contract with the New York Yankees for eight years, totaling $218 million, according to MLB.com. The contract extends through the 2032 season. The deal was finalized on December 18, 2024, after an agreement reached during the Winter Meetings in Dallas, Texas.
What happened here, Alex? Ran out of money? Would it have taken that much to keep Fried from leaving?
Jurickson Profar is under contract with the Atlanta Braves for three years, worth $42 million. The contract was signed in January 2025, with a salary breakdown of $12 million in 2025 and $15 million in each of the following two years (2026 and 2027), according to MLB.com and The New York Times. This contract does not include any signing bonus or options.
This should have been bargain basement, but, alas, Hopefully Profar can at least produce numbers on par with this contract. I wonder if we could have used this 42 million anywhere else
