2025 - the return of nasty dominating LSU defense?

Arguably the most disappointing thing about the last five years of LSU Football has been the frankly soft defenses we have seen on the field. It has been truly disappointing seeing the tigers getting physically dominated like they have been. With five likely starters coming in from the transfer portal in Jack Pyburn, Patrick Payton, AJ Haulcy, Manson Delane, and Tamarcus Cooley, and the return of absolute animals Whit Weeks and Perk, is this the year we see a return of physically dominating LSU defense?
I predict yes. Each of these guys mentioned is a proven playmaker. I think we are going to see a lot of turnovers going the tigers way this season. 2025 is going to be the next electric LSU defense that is talked about for years to come.

History shows that the national champion team has at least a top 30 or better defense. The Cam Newton Auburn team was the only exception.
You can make the playoffs with an average defense, but you need a very good to elite defense to win in the playoffs. The Tigers were 59th in scoring defense and 61st in yards allowed defense.
Another big jump is necessary in 2025. The Clemson opener will be a telltale sign of how good it will be.

Interior DL and safeties leave a lot to be desired but hopefully so

I am afraid the heyday of defensive football. Is over. The rules of the game have changed (I.e.targeting, etc.) to be slanted against defenses. Fans want to see high flying games where a lot of points are scored, and good defense doesn’t lent\d itself to that kind of game.

True that all teams are allowing more points now, but you still have to be in the top 30 to win championships.

I have hope! But I think rules changes are so lopsided that I fear great defenses will never allowed again in football...Safety for the players and lack of patience of the fans.

I sure hope so. There's a YouTube clip that highlights the 2011 d backs and its my favorite. I love watching a dominating defense that makes an offense crumble.

The pieces are finally in place to get back to that standard, and it will be moving forward. Last year was the last year in the BK era where we will be in a talent deficit on defense, the lack of dudes in the backend, esp was glaring.

I think the definition of "dominating defense" has changed a bit, but I definitely see this defense having a really good year. A little breakdown of the average PPG given up by the top 10 P5 (P4) defenses by year:
2011 - 16.1 (LSU - 2nd - 11.3)
2012 - 15.5 (LSU - 12th - 17.5)
2013 - 16.6 (LSU - 21st - 22.0)
2014 - 18.3 (LSU - 4th - 17.5)
2015 - 16.3 (LSU - 41st - 24.3)
2016 - 16.2 (LSU - 5th - 15.8)
2017 - 15.9 (LSU - 14th - 18.9)
2018 - 16.2 (LSU - 26th - 21.8 - grossly skewed by 7OT game)
2019 - 15.2 (LSU - 33rd - 21.9)
2020 - 19.1 (LSU - 99th - 34.9)
2021 - 16.5 (LSU - 70th - 26.6)
2022 - 16.4 (LSU - 34th - 22.5)
2023 - 15.2 (LSU - 82nd - 28.0)
2024 - 15.8 (LSU - 59th - 24.3)

I really expected to see a significant upward trend when I began going through this. Aside from having a pretty brutal road schedule this year, no reason LSU can't get back to surrendering under 20 PPG. It'll be the first time in 8 years that we've done it, though.

I'll believe it when I see it. Seems like every year is going to be THE year our defense is back to form. Last year was an improvement, but a long way from the norm that we had during Saban's and CLM's tenure.

I'll believe it when I see it. Yes, we got some good portal talent, but IMO, the problem has always been coaching and scheme. Our coaches seem to be bad at teaching technique, especially in the secondary. Like I said, I'll believe it when I see it.

Nah. When has BK ever had an elite defense? 1 or 2 years at ND with manti teo? The defense ain’t gonna look like SABAN or Les miles defense

This is really good info. I know it’s been said that the game has changed and it’s harder to be a good defense. But this shows that top 10 defenses are just as good, if not better, than they were 10+ years ago.
