Lets separate Queen, the player, from the Trade

I think most of us agree on the trade that the piling on is warranted. It happened, it is what it is, we can scream into the wind (and I have been) as much as we want, but its not going to change direction.
So let's talk about Derik Queen.
I've seen some kind of ridiculous, not factual, emotional stuff about him last night.
Dumars referred to him as a foundational player. So why does he feel that way?
He is an incredibly unique player, and in many ways a truly interesting Big for the modern game.
-Great Rebounder, a magnet for the ball
-Extremely good handles and moves for the position
-A connector on offense that also finishes in a multitude of crafty ways
-On defense, he is actually good at switching
He's honestly a very good player.
Yes, he is a bit of a tweener but he does have great size he uses to his advantage, and there are some conditioning concerns despite him playing hard. He is not a good one on one defender at all, to say the least.
But man, I DO like the player and think he could be fun. (This is disregarding the trade, obviously)

I like both players we drafted. Hated the capital we had to give up next year, with that being said. You hit on these picks and that pick dont matter.

I think he’s a 4 in the NBA. You can’t have him as your 5 unless like Giannis is your 4.
I like him, he is a very talented passer and ball handler at his size. Kinda reminds me of Julius Randle.
He’s an awful fit with Zion though

He's a 4 who isn't good on D (and he purportedly tries) and (as of now) isn't particularly good at outside shooting who has to play next to Zion.
He's also old (going to be 21 in December) and lacks "run and jump" athleticism (he does have elite balance, coordination, and that sort of athleticism).
He fits a version of this team without Zion much more than a team with Zion.
He also has to continue to improve his body. I read reports he lost 25 lbs before last year and he has to continue that trend b/c he's not in good shape at all even after that transformation.

So right now:
Starters: Poole, Herb, Trey, Zion, Missi
Bench: Jose/Fears, Hawkins/Reeves, Bey, Queen, Matkovic.
35-40 wins ceiling but it'll be more entertaining to watch than last season.

I think he can do both, and will, depending on the matchup. If you have other spacers on the court, you can play him with Missi. Wemby would eat his lunch, but there are some matchups out there for him

I think you are going with the most negative aspects of him that you can find.
He is truly gifted in a lot of ways on offense and does switch well

Only in conjunction with your positives in OP.
I think he can be a fine player in the objective.
I don't think Queen and Zion can work as a top-4 seed in the West combo.

A poor man's boogie?
Yes. He's like Zach Randolph.
He'd have probably been a top-3 pick in the prior era.

I agree with everything Fun Bunch said. It's the perimeter defense skill for me that really stands out. I'm not saying he's AD, but he's serviceable and will only get better as his body continues to improve. I also fully buy in on him developing an outside shot.

Joe kind of danced around worrying about fit with Zion last night
It makes me think that they aren't factoring that in and just are going with guys they think will be great going forward and Zion might or might not be here in the future

It's not much different than Zion playing with Olynyk and Missi last year. Queen can play off ball ala short roller where he's elite as a prospect. Whether it works out or not is more dependent on Zion staying on the floor.

I agree with this. I do think he's KAT light. Don't see toughness but if he can work on that outside shot and get consistent he helps.
That being said, unfortunately, you can't separate the two. The kid will have to outplay whomever we could get next year to be worth it. I don't see that happening. I'm all for calculated risk. This was a stupid one.

That makes the BI trade/situation even shittier
Queen and Fears could 100% play with BI

His touch is such that he can do it for sure. Very nice touch on his shot
He also switches really well out to the perimeter as you said.
Guy is VERY mobile. I think people don't get that

Are you sure Poole is the starting PG and not Fears? Because I can see a scenario where Poole is the 6th man off the bench and 2nd team scorer.

He’s a very fun player to watch. He needs to improve his motor and get in better shape.
Maybe he’s a small ball 5 but I’d imagine for the regular season would be better as a 4

Yes. PG is the hardest position to play coming into the league. It's rare now to see a PG especially one on the smaller side come in on day 1, start, and hold his own.
