Why is everyone panicking over a draft pick for next year?

It doesn't seem like Giannis is going anywhere or I think it would have happened tonight with #2 and San Antonio. I think the Bucks are middle of the pack next year and I think the Pelicans are too. Both are play-in type teams next year but thats just my opinion. Even if say the Bucks pick at 9 and the Pelicans at 17 or vice versa, have you really given up that much? I don’t think so if you had conviction over Queen I’m good with us being aggressive. One or Griff’s major faults was holding onto assets too long then they lose their value. Maybe Queen busts or maybe he’s a very good 4/5. We won’t know for a couple years but I don’t mind being aggressive and taking your shot. We have this year basically to see if this team as constructed around Zion and Trey can be a winner. Queen has lots of faults no doubt about it but he can also score the ball and we needed another front court scorer besides Zion. He’s also insurance if or when Z gets hurt. Now you need to move Hawkins or Dejounte or both.

What if either get the #1 pick?
Remember, since it's 'based on the best pick of 2 teams, that chance doubles.
We currently have a 0% chance of getting the #1 pick and we gave up that 2x shot for #13 and a so-so prospect + another 1st this year

We’re both play in teams at best if we’re healthy for a full season. Odds of that happening aren’t great

I’m not crazy about the deal wither but I also understand the logic around it. Hell who knows, maybe both teams make the playoffs then no-one will care as much. Time will tell. We did get 2 very talented players at positions of need tonight. If this season goes tits up like last year then we will have a 1st next year, if not several, because if suck by the deadline I could see any or all 3 of Herb, Trey and Z getting traded which would give us multiple draft assets and expiring contracts to get cap space.

That’s my point. Also, if we’re good-decent we could flip Poole for a 1st next year

What if Giannis/Zion blows his ACL? Their team would have a bottom five record. Even with unusual health, both teams are likely play-in level at best. The value we got in Queen, for an unprotected first, when both teams could potentially land top 4 next year, is just shite. Pure shite. We should've put top 5-7 protection on it at minimum.

Did you not see what two teams just picked one and two?
One had the highest or one of the highest trajectories in the league before this year and the other was in the finals last year….
Next question.

This franchise has been spinning its wheels for the last 15+ years. One pick next year isn’t going to suddenly skyrocket us to a title
Once I accepted the first part the second part has little to no impact on my outlook on this team

Because there is a good chance it will be the first overall pick.

To be fair. Dumars and Weaver are coming in after HOF level of malpractice by Griffin for 6 straight years
I’ll give these guys a shot to make their mistakes after Griff made dozens and led us to 21-61 in year 6 of his snake oil salesman rebuild.
Did I want Fears or Queen tonight? Nah. Did I want to trade our 2026 unprotected? Nah. But I’ll give this regime a chance to frick up. Griffin was on pace to be here for 40 years and never win a playoff series. I’ll give it 2-3 years before I pass judgment on Dumars potentially being worse. Because it’s damn near impossible to be worse than Griffin.

You can play what if scenarios until the cows come home but what happens if Queen turns into a 20&10 guy and the Pelicans go to the finals. We know it will never happen but it’s a what if.
