My favorite is mestizo … what else should I try

Modesto and Blue Corn are two decent alternatives to Mestizo. Unless you want something more authentic Mexican.

Barracuda is a cool spot with good food .. not really a "restaurant"

Veracruz is really good. Not traditional Tex Mex.

I like Modesto.
And for all of you suggesting Ideal Market or La Morenita or La Tienda, they have great food, but I'm not bringing the family there or going on a date night there, so don't bother. Those are great options for eating lunch on my own and I recognize that.

One of the myriad Mexican food trucks in town. They are pretty much all better than any of the restaurants here - and much cheaper.

Not "in" Baton Rouge, but Don Beto - either the food truck or the restaurant in Gonzales

Luna Cocina on Perkins was pretty solid when we ate there this past spring.
