Hey folks, heading to St. John in a couple of weeks. I've seen some threads on here with good info, but nothing super recent - has anyone been lately? Any tips? It's my 2nd time to the USVI, and first staying on St. John. We get into STT at about 3PM, have a jeep rented through a company there, and are planning to pick it up and hit Cost U Less on the way to the car ferry, hoping to make the 5PM one. There will be a group of 6 of us staying in the Rendezvous Bay area/Gift Hill Rd for a week.

How is our loose itinerary?

Sun - Fly in, get settled, pick up food to go and eat at villa

Mon - Explore day, no concrete plans, just thinking wake up, pack the Jeep and see what we can find. Maybe Skinny Legs for lunch and Windmill Bar for sunset.

Tues - Planning to take the ferry to Jost for the day

Wed - Big cruise ship day, will plan to hit the Coral Bay area and probably do Lime Out

Thurs - Private BVI charter booked. Baths, Willy T, Indians, etc

Fri - Do nothing day, probably just hang out at the Villa or explore Cruz Bay

Sat - Leaving open, could explore more beaches with the Jeep, or might rent a dinghy and hop around.

Sun - Fly out.

-

What say you? I haven't booked any dinner reservations yet, because I'm not sure how much energy we'll have after being out exploring all day to commit to dinner plans. Should I just go ahead and make them now? I've heard good things about Morgan's Mango, and La Tapa looks neat - any other can't miss restaurants? Probably just going to cook at the Villa or do take out after the boat day on Thurs. We're considering checking a cooler with steaks, etc, is this worth doing? Also going to try to put in a grocery order for Cost U Less so we can try and save some time on the way in.

The previous threads have been really helpful with planning, but any other tips or suggestions are appreciated!

You nailed it. Your restaurants are solid. Morgan’s Mango on the touristy side but good. Banana Deck has good food as does ZoZo’s at Caneel Bay.

I’m not sure of the vibe near the wharf as a lot changed since Irma but I’m sure Beach Bar is still fun for drinks and a little nightlife.

Enjoy. Your itinerary looks great.

Remember, you need a boat to get to Limeout. It’s a floater on the bay.

Youre gonna have a great time. the schedule you have looks great and the days with nothing planned always turn out fine.

We ate out each night but did breakfast and packed picnics from the rental. Buying food on SJ island isn't easy...perhaps check for better food options on St Thomas before you catch the ferry?

Was just there in January. Some amazing restaurants you need to consider are Zozo's and Extra Virgin. We love Morgan's Mango, and always go, but those two are better in my opinion.

We wanted to go to Lovango Resort & Beach Club but couldn't find the time. It looks really fun, but pricey. Probably boujee too... It's an island about 10 minutes boat ride from Cruz Bay so you'll need to book the ferry over there. Here's their website if you want to check it out - Lovango Beach Club

Been there many times. Willy T’s is cool if you want to jump in the water. The Indians is really great to snorkel around. The Baths…..take a noodle from the boat. The swim in from the mooring ball can be a challenge.

I’ve seen a lot of things in my life but the Baths (Virgin Gorda) are really something.

Don’t just see it from the waterside, make sure to walk up through it.

It’s other-worldly.

Foxy’s on Jost has some evidence of LSU folks previously being there. Bring a pennant or flag of your favorite team to hang there.

Have a great time.

I wonder how Foxy’s is doing. Last time I was there Foxy seemed to be in declining health and the kids were starting to bicker.

I was last there in November but I didn’t wear my “Family Counselor” hat.

I wanted a place that served hard drinks to men who wanted to get drunk fast, not some Flaming Rum Punch drinkers.

My in-laws got back last weekend and they sent videos from Windmill Bar and it looked awesome. We have gone a couple times and I think your itinerary looks great. I like that y'all leave open days to just roam around. Those are usually my favorite on the islands. We loved Maho Bay but in-laws said it was very crowded this time. Hawksnest is another beach we loved on St. John. Y'all enjoy! I am always envious when someone says that's where they're heading. It will never disappoint!

Thank y'all for the responses! I'm just getting back on to check these. Glad to hear the itinerary looks solid, I didn't want to over plan, but also wanted to make sure we had some idea of what we were doing and when, etc.

I tried to book ZoZo last night, but they are closed for the season :(. I did book a table at La Tapa for Friday night, looking forward to that. We'll probably try to go to one more "nice" dinner while we're there. Some of the group isn't showing up until Wednesday, so it makes planning a bit trickier, but we'll figure it out.

If anyone has been to Lovango, is it worth doing? I know there are reports of it being pricey, but we could possibly check it out on Saturday if it is worth it to go over there. I also don't want to try and do too much, and just make sure we have open time for relaxing, so maybe not. Also, when planning our charter activity, I booked extra time for us to be able to get out to either Saba Rock or Bitter End (ideally both, but not sure if there will be enough time), we'll be skipping Jost this day, so it should be doable. If you had to pick one to go check out, what would you say? My general thought is that we will head straight to the Baths after clearing customs and then will go to one or the other for lunch/drinks.

As far as packing goes, outside of things like reef-safe sunscreen, bug spray, and other beach related acoutrements, is there anything you'd recommend bringing?

Those that have hiked, do you have any suggestions? We aren't looking for any sort of crazy elevation changes, but an easy to moderate hike with something cool at the end would be nice. I had heard doing Ram's Head at full moon is really cool, any word on that?

As far as beaches go, I really like to snorkel and am bringing my gear down, I think the others might be a little less experienced. I had planned on doing Trunk Bay with the underwater trail, and Maho to see the turtles. I know those are probably the 2 most crowded spots. Are there some others you'd recommend? Cinnamon? Haulover? Honeymoon? Etc? (Eta: just saw Hawksnest, will add to the list!)

Again, really appreciate all the responses! I know this is a bit more of a "do it yourself" trip, and am just hoping to be able to educate myself as much as possible before getting on the island. Thanks y'all!

Hoping to get over there to see him, I've been to Soggy before, but never to Foxy's. Want to try and catch him if we can.

We were just there in April, and I think La Tapa is my favorite restaurant there.

This is what I generally hear from folks, it looks really nice, but not sure if it's worth it to venture over there or not. We might just save this for another time.

Huge tapas guy, so I'm glad to hear this!! Will probably try to get a table at Extra Virgin or Morgan's Mango another night. I think we're going to grab steaks from Costco and bring them down in a cooler for meals at the villa, and then just wing it other nights.

Did Exuma a few years ago, stayed next to Blu on the Water there and the restaurant would bring us meals to our little place. It was AWESOME. We were always tired after being out on the boat all day, so we did this a few times. Was so nice to just show up and be able to place a food order without having to worry about going anywhere. I don't want to plan dinners on big excursion days just based off of this previous experience. I figure it will be the same deal in St. John.

In-laws loved rams head and said it is a must do. I also think they really liked the snorkeling at Francis Bay. They said they saw a ton of starfish, rays, fish, turtles, etc. The last time the wife and I went we loved the restaurant 1864. It is a little more pricey but very nice for a more upscale dinner. Loved the fried scallops. Drinks were very good as well. But you really cannot go wrong with where you go or what you do IMO.

Oh cool, had heard of Francis Bay in my research, but hadn't seen too many reports. Thanks, we'll add it to the list! 1862 as well, the view from there looks outstanding.

Ram's Head is an absolute must. Be sure to stop at the cobblestone beach along that path on the way back and enjoy the tranquility there for a bit. Take your snorkels, water shoes, and some dry shorts to put on to finish the hike back.
We also hiked to the sugar plantation ruins-cant remember the name of that trail....the hike back out is a real bitch, pretty much all uphill. It was cool to see, but i prob wouldnt do it again.
Make sure you spend time at cinammon bay and hawks nest beaches.
