T-Rex escape scene: Original Jurassic Park

Probably one of the greatest, if not the greatest special effects scenes in cinema history.
No music, just rain and straight up terror. To this day its the best depiction of a dinosaur we have ever seen.
I love how the animal acts curious about the car and its not just some blood thirsty monster. It attacks the car and spits out the undercarriage, nudges it, its curious.
The sound editing in this scene is an absolute master class. The stomps, the roars, and no music at all, just rain.
32 years ago and still holds up.

Kinda blows my mind I saw this in theaters as an 8 year old. But my daughter that is 8 has known and loved this movie for a couple years now, so I can't judge

Its insane how good it still looks.
For reference, if it was 1993 the year the movie released we would be looking at special effects scenes from 1961 for comparison

The rain as well to hide any deficiencies at the time was brilliant.

Always thought it was a bit odd that the Trex comes walking through the fence/wall but when the the kids and Dr. Grant escape over the wall they rappel down 15 feet of so and then the car falls past them another 20-30 ft.
Something a bit off. Still a great scene but that doesn't add up at all.

This elevates it to one of the greatest true horror scenes ever IMO. I don't think John Williams even attempted to score music for it.
It's similar to Jaws when the shark jumps onto the Orca. No music, just Quint desperately screaming. But that was at the end of the movie. Spielberg hits us with the T-Rex scene in the middle of Jurassic Park like a sack of bricks. It's still mesmerizing after all these years.

But how dumb was it to shine a spotlight on the TRex? Even if you know nothing about how its vision works, you’d not shine a damn light on it.

No question, big disconnect in continuity. They could have easily had it flipped so that the jeep fell off a cliff on the OTHER side of the road, but they were wrapped up in getting the falling jeep shot, they just botched the set up.

Speilberg has commented on it. He says he knew and knows it doesn't make sense, but he didn't care because he really liked the sequence and thought audiences wouldn't care because they would be so caught up. essentially

To this day the greatest experience I ever had in a movie theatre. I remember after the T rex scene looking around and the whole place was wide eyed, you could hear a pin drop.
No one could quantify what they had just seen
My cousin next to me was speechless.

It really does blow modern day CGI out of the water. Practical effects and the imagination will always triumph. CGI is best used to enhance.
