Curious about typical and achievable summertime pool water temps.

My system app shows 92 degree water temp. 20k gallon pool running 12 hrs day.

Having VSP installed in 2 wks and hoping running waterfall, sprayers etc 24/7 will help a few degrees. Can anything else be done short of installing a chiller system?

Try somehow putting a light-colored shade cloth over the pool during the day?

also, consider running a hose at bottom to inject some cooler water into the pool

Run your pool at night instead of during the day, it will lower your pool temp as you are circulating during the coolest ambient temp. We average 105' to 110' in the summer, it lowers the pool temp another 3 to 5 degrees.

Run the sprayers overnight, from about midnight to 7am. The goal is to move the water through the air when outside temp is lowest, then not move it when it’s high. It won’t be magic but I can achieve a 5deg just not running the pump during the day, which is noticeable. Your mileage is gonna vary by your setup, and effectiveness of sprayers is dependent on dew point.

I did this last summer, and it is awesome. Set the temp and enjoy. I haven't used the heater part yet. I am sitting at 88* right now, so I will probably start the chiller today or tomorrow.

Running mostly at night helps but that’s the worst thing you can do to contain algae.
Aeration helps but that requires extra acid and bicarbonate.
All of my neighbors without attached spas have heat pumps to cool their pools in the summer. I have a spa attached so it would feel silly to have a heat pump and a gas heater.
Our pool was 88 yesterday and was still super refreshing for ten hours straight. I’m afraid next weekend won’t be as nice.

I fought this for a couple years and just broke down and put a heat pump in this year.

I had one at my house in Baton Rouge and loved it. After being in my pool here in Spring today I will be getting one on this also.

I installed a 29x29x29 shade sail that covers 1/2 the pool in the afternoon with trees that provide shade in the am. It has made a big difference.

This is the BEST way to keep your pool cooler brutal summer temps, short of "pool coolers." Shade cloths will provide some minimal relief, but nothing like overnight running.

If you have sprayers, run those overnight, as well.

Wrong.

Sunlight degrades chlorine and the opposite of what you said happens at night. Chlorine production is better at night.

I run mine at night and have never had an issue with algae. Actually my water has never been clearer.

I shock it weekly, at night, especially after heavy use or heavy rainfall.

What’s the color of your plaster? We had a dark plaster pool when I was growing up and it was hot as hell in the warm months. It looks great but makes a huge difference in temperature. If it’s dark, you’re fighting an uphill battle.

Those crepe myrtles have to be a pain as far as keeping the pool clean.

(I speak from experience)

Once a year they drop their flowers (last few weeks) and my skimmers tend to grab 95% of it. Then, they drop their leaves but for whatever reason that rarely hits the pool. It really hasn't been an issue and the shade in the evenings is well worth it. (plus they are beautiful in bloom)

They're a good 15' from the pool itself so that probably helps. They do leave a dead flower mess on my concrete, but the rains tend to wash it away and never stained.
