Does anyone here have a son who recently joined the Marines?

My son just graduated HS and told us a couple of days ago that he is going to join and wants to do infantry. He's been discussing military, and of course wife (no pics) was trying to steer him more towards the Air Force or the Navy. Straight A student and 28 on the ACT. He talked to a recruiter yesterday and agreed to sign up, absolutely adamant. He graduated young though and is still 17, won't turn 18 for a few more months.
I'm retired fire service but never did military. Had friends during Desert Storm in the Marines, and some guys I worked with in fire service who were in the Marines, but the youngest I know is probably in his mid-30s. With everything going on in the ME I am a little nervous about it. Just curious how it is now in the Marines? He's like me and goofy as hell, but he played football and stays in good shape. He can handle getting his arse chewed out, common sense is a big problem.
I don't know, proud but wife (again no pics) is pretty hysterical about it. I deeply inside am also in a way. TIA

I don’t think there’s a better fit for the Marine Corps

There are no non-combatants in the Marine Corp. Take that for what it is worth.

God bless your son. He will never have trouble finding future employment with the discipline they instill in him in the military.

Yea, this
Sounds like he's got the grades to go to college on uncle Sam's dime and do the whole officer thing if he wanted to. Options are always a good thing.

They’ll probably start the Iran draft soon anyway so we’ll all be going

Sounds like you have raised a great strong-minded son who has determined that he wants to serve his country. It may be hard to take off the parent glasses, but I am sure he will do great things.
However, you may want to discuss with him about going to college first and then going to the marines upon graduation and becoming an infantry officer instead of starting at the bottom of the totem pole. My brother is a MARSOC raider of 13 years after going this route and deciding to make a career out of it. My brother in law is living it up in San Clemente, CA as an officer and absolutely loves it.

There will always be something going on in the world. I became a Marine thinking there was no one left to kill. 9/11 changed all that. If he's a good kid, the Marine Corps can make him better. Semper Fi and welcome to the family.

I joined the marines when I was 17 after I graduated early in '04, wouldn't have done it any other way. I would make sure he gets the job he wants in writing before he signs anything.

I did but his only reply was he’d rather go through boot camp at 18 then 22.

No idea why you’d want to join the military and be beholden to retard politicians in today’s day and age. I have no interest in putting my life in danger for retarded nation building

With grades like that, go to college via ROTC and join whichever branch as an officer.

With that he should qualify for Marine Corps officer programs.

I thought you did boot camp prior to starting school?
Regardless, that is short sighted. Free education which also counts towards years of service and starting out somewhere other than the bottom...
Hes got an option not everyone has and should take it IMO.
