Florida-based Stanley Cup Winners:

-Tampa Bay Lightning - 2004, 2020, 2021

-Florida Panthers - 2024, 2025

Last Canadian Champ:

- 1993 Montreal Canadiens

Make it make sense...

Well income taxes might have something to do with it,,and the salaries thrusly affected

but that would be it

No sales tax in Florida makes it easier to sign and retain free agents . Florida’s higher level of freedom (or perceived) in the wake of Covid probably helped as well

The panthers were a poverty franchise for years and only recently turned it around

Canadian Teams the current political paradigm and in the salary cap era will be at an inherent disadvantage

No income tax in Florida means those teams have an effectively higher salary cap. Like 10% higher than some other teams, maybe even more with canadians who get raped by taxes

That doesnt hurt.

Correct. Teams do not get tax breaks in Canada. Montreal has to surrender half their profits to taxes. I’d have to imagine Toronto and Ottawa part with at least 40%.

Florida and Tampa also have the weather factor. Who wants ti play in Edmonton, Calgary or Vancouver in January?

For the Panthers the answer is Zito. Masterful acquisitions. Maurice can get the most out of a skilled roster which is why he came here.

Canadians live on the mythos of "Canadians."

If you've ever worked with them... they are often terrible people. Completely arrogant in anything that is "Canadian."

Honestly, some of the rudest, most insufferable people out there. Any Canadian company is a terrible partner compared to American companies. The worst.

Then Texas should have a bunch of Stanley cups too. In baseball the Dodgers and Yankees who are in high tax states are dominating right now. Like any professional sport, you have to have a combination of things including an owner willing to spend and a great GM and scouts who know who to spend money on.

The question was Florida versus Canada, and the comparative NHL success as of late

That whole country is on its way to a NY Rangers epic drought before Messier.

Canada started the slow NHL fade after Gretzky and Messier left that northern territory.

Tampa and Florida were not powerhouses until recently, so the tax argument isn't strong. They guys who play in the NHL care more about the game than pros in other sports. You saw it firsthand in the 4 Nations Faceoff. USA vs. Canada was played like a game that mattered outside of winning a trophy.

I doubt any of those players are from Florida.

It is a pro sport. I doubt NYC has produced more MLB players than Georgia or Florida but NYC team has more championships

Baseball has no salary cap and NY and LA are the 2 biggest markets in the country, so their teams have a lot more ability to outspend everyone else. Then add in all the deferred salary nonsense and its even more skewed in favor of NY and LA teams.

Go look at the MLB payrolls. The Yankees, Dodgers, and Mets are the 3 highest payrolls in MLB this year, last year, so far next year, and at least 2 of those were in the top 3 for most years prior.

Texas has one NHL team, and they won the Stanley Cup.

No salary cap in MLB, so rest of your point irrelevant.

States with income tax are losers, and:

Both are expansion teams, for some perspective,,,

Inaugural Tampa Bay Season
1992-1993

Inaugural Florida Panthers Season 1993-1994

OT: Inagural Las Vegas Golden Knights Season 2017-2018

So Tampa’s first season in the NHL is was the last time a Canadian team (Montreal) won the Cup.

It’s quite pathetic for Canada and I love it.
