Insider Gaming, a site founded by the well-known leaker Tom Henderson, reported an intriguing rumor suggesting that the story of GTA 6 was rejected three times by Take-Two, and the prospect of starting over led to Dan Houser’s departure.

According to information provided by Fravilys, which should naturally be taken with a grain of salt, the first script was a detective story worthy of a thriller, focusing on three different protagonists. This project was carried on until the end of 2016, but at that point, Take-Two vetoed it, deeming the plot “Too dark and did not meet their expectations.”

The second version of the script involved two protagonists: a policewoman and a “Drug smuggler’s underling, as crazy as Trevor from GTA V. This iteration remained in development for eighteen months, but then Take-Two intervened again, canceling everything and ordering a reset.

The third prototype was similar to the second, but with one important difference: the grieving policewoman was replaced by an African-American man, a former soldier, released from prison and falling into the criminal underworld. This script was canceled in March 2019, according to the source.

I'm sure they woulda made them work but those rejected scripts sound way less fun than what it ended up. A Bonnie and Cylde type story set in Miami sounds exactly like what GTA DNA is all about.

I have a pitch

You start flat broke and have to do little missions to earn quick cash and elevate your criminal status - the missions grow while you build a criminal enterprise that generates mega wealth.

Why does it have to be anything else?

In fairness, that was very similar to the plot of many Blaxploitation films - and the genre's legendary parody, I'm Gonna Get You Sucka, but I agree with you that it would have been a compelling game.

It's the archetypal American mobster storyline, based on the centuries-old Horatio Alger story, that birthed the crime genre.

Version 1 sounded awesome. Was a big fan of L.A. Noire when that got released. The story got a little flat after the Dahlia act.

great game. wouldnt be upset if they made a sequel.

bonnie and clyde is cool and will probably work out

but playing a dirty cop that basically has to solve his own crimes woulda been cool too.
