When do they draw and what is the ratio.

Tomorrow I’m pretty sure. The ratio depends on where you applied.

I put in for 4 or 5 years before I finally got picked last year. Once I started looking at all of the BS they make you go through I decided it wasn't worth it.

Should've gotten an email today.
Each WMA is different ratio.
They ruined the system when they changed it to "select three" WMAs. in the past you solely selected one. Now everyone is applying for multiple WMAs so the Ratio decreases substantially.
In our case, only one person out of 15 got drawn for the WMA nearest my camp. Whereas 4 of my 15 got drawn for other WMAs we put in for because we had option 2 and option 3 slots and just selected WMAs near the house.
In reality would much rather only be allowed to select one WMA, but happy with tags none the less.

I drew in my 3rd choice.

Yeah, most of our group drew third choice too.
Just doesnt make sense to me that we win third choice Pearl River WMA (one of the highest application amounts per year) compared to our first choice (Pass a Loutre) which always has generally the lowest.
Oh well, will take the tags however we can get em.

I didnt get picked. First year applying. Being Louisiana and all I didnt know how legit the process was.
Also, why is there a lottery to begin with? I have seen more gators in the past 4-5 years than ever.

Every General Hunting License in Louisiana should come with one alligator tag.
The marsh I hunt (State WMA/Federal NWRs) are completely overrun.
But the Lottery system solely relates to properties owned/managed by LDWF for recreational hunting of gators. There are also commerical guys that hunt and have licenses to hunt them too.
I hope LDWF gets permission from Feds to open up gator season on the NWRs, bc the NWRs have become overrun with gators and they arent afraid of people.

If anyone got drawn for sherburne I know where a couple of good ones are - problem w sherburne is most of the wma is federal land and that is not part of lottery

It's tough but you have to get where they aren't. Blind river attracts a lot of commercial fishermen, they get to bait a day early so it gives them the advantage. If the water is up run the sloughs, if its down, then good luck finding a spot.

Lottery is just for public land / WMA's.
If you own property that's considered gator habitat, LDWF will give you tags without any lottery drawing. Number of tags based on property size and the gator population / carrying capacity.

For the ignorant on the subject like me, if you get a tag and get a gator, do you sell the skin of it? If so, how much does it go for?
Posted on 6/17/25 at 4:55 pm to bbvdd
First time I got tags, I called around just to see price of cleaning. I also asked just for wondering price of them. no one wanted the gators. The market already tough so they only would buy commercially.

$5/ft maybe, $50/ft and a year to get it tanned if American or Rogwieller will even take it. This was 2014 tanning price so probably double now. La needs to half the reptile population statewide.
