Is golf the only one where you would get a chance to actually compete?

Perhaps tennis? Maybe some track and field events? UFC?

How would you get someone to even talk to you in football, basketball, baseball etc?

Give me golf all day. Scottie won something like 10 mil in the last few months if I remember correctly. You practice, by playing golf. You walk, someone else carries your bag and scouts the course for you. Tennis you have a lot of running. Football you get hit. Baseball and basketball is more of a team sport.

I'd show up at the ballpark with my bat and glove slung over my shoulder like I came in on the train from a rural mining town and say I'm here for tryouts.

ETA: Baseball or Golf would be ideal

Basketball wouldn't be as hard as you'd think. You'd have to get in on some semi-pro runs like the Drew League. Once the NBA players showed up in the offseason some team would notice you looking better than NBA players and you'd at least get a G League look.

Distance running would probably be the easiest. Qualify for the Boston Marathon and then win it - instant best in the world.

Baseball would be easy. You could probably even call up your local spring training facility when they’re in and get some time on a mound in front of SOMEONE if you put in some effort.

Kind of a stupid question. If you're the best in the world at any somewhat popular sport you could get into the top leagues pretty damn easily.

Tell me the mechanism that a random 30-year-old man with no football background gets an opportunity to play in the NFL?

In golf and tennis, there are “open” qualifying opportunities.

There’s always baseball showcase events throughout the US and if you randomly showed up throwing 100 mph scouts would notice. If that didn’t work you could play independent ball and put up stupid numbers. Idk about UFC. Maybe do some local cage fights and keep calling out Dana White and hope a video goes viral on Tweeter. Football if you haven’t been to college still have 4 years of eligibility. Could walk on somewhere. Coaches are always looking for human tackling dummies. If that isn’t an option you could tryout for an indoor football team. Just don’t hang out with Aaron Hernandez.

Yeah if you just played at big gyms or courts your name would get out REAL quickly

I don't think it's that hard to get a tryout for the DLeague either. That's all you'd need.

Pay some school a nominal amount to participate in their pro day.

Social media posts showing you dominating your local top end high school/college kids.

If you're the best in the world at football you'll be found out quickly if you're trying to be.

Now if your question was "if you woke up and magically were just good enough to be a NFL/MLB/NBA/PGA/etc etc player" then that would be different.

Same way a guy driving a beer truck that never played college football ends up playing for the Saints (in the season he turned 30) and sticks around for 6 seasons.

It's not unheard of even for someone that wasn't the best ever.

A middle aged fat guy posting video of a 9.5 second 100 meters on social media would instantly go viral.

Edit: there are open participation track meets to get a verified time.

Arena League, CFL, UFL then it would be pretty quick to identify the greatest player in the world.

Do I “magically” look the part too? Am I going to walk into a pro facility with a body like prime Megatron or Mark McGwire or Shaq? That would make it a little easier.

Barring that, it still would not be that difficult. Coaching is a very connected profession. If you were truly the best in the world, you could (if nothing else) walk into a large high school or small college and offer to pay their coach money to work you out for an hour or two. Once you blew him away with your skill, he will “know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy” that will get you on the right trajectory.
