Rat snake

I had an encounter with a 4-foot rat snake in my backyard, specifically under my patio, climbing around. I know there was a bird's nest that most likely attracted it to the area. I was letting the nest be for this year because I can'kill baby birds. Should I kill the snake if I see it again or let it be? I let it be for now, but what is the OT's opinion?

Rat snake, definitely let it live. That's a good friend. Free pest control.

Let nature be nature
I wouldn’t kill a beneficial snake

It eats mice and rats too. Thank it for you not having an infestation and let it go. They aren't aggressive at all.

If you don't want it, catch him and bring him to my place. Can't keep the rats out of my chicken coop.

You could always put him in box or bucket (with a lid) and relocate him somewhere else.
People with chickens would love to have them around. Even if they eat the occasional egg or two.

Why tf would you kill a rat snake. Absolutely worst case scenario just move him somewhere else.

while i am not a fan snakes in general, they do have value in managing rodents. in my personal experience, these guys tend to be rather angry.

Our quarterly pest control service sets two locked industrial type rat poison bait stations, separated outside along the house wall on the ground. When checked the bait has disintegrated due to moisture, never eaten.
Thank you for your service Mr. Rat Snake, cya every now and then along the fence where you hang out.

Rat snake = good snake.
The copperhead I saw last night at 9:30pm in front of my neighbor’s house = good snake I’ll probably need to kill one day.
Snakes are part of the ecosystem. You do NOT want to live in a wooded or natural area without snakes around. They stay hidden, are rarely aggressive, and only bite when stepped on or messed with.

I had a rat snake encounter on my property this week too.
fricker even bowed up on me and I let him go on his way. I have a lot of property for him to patrol. He’s not going to bother me except when I bug him for some photo ops
