Cancun safety in the current political climate

Me and my wife have an all inclusive booked in late July right outside of Cancun. Some family members are really worried about us going because of kidnapping and crime.
I’ve done a ton of research recently, which put me at ease because everyone I’ve talked to and everything I’ve read said if you stay within the resort grounds there’s extremely little chance that anything will happen.
However, with the current Mexico stuff going on in Los Angeles and other states, it’s making me a little wary again.
Do you travel gurus think we have anything to really worry about?

Went to Excellence in Playa Mujeres a couple of years ago. Same concerns about local violence that time but had no problems at all. Of course, stayed on property the entire week.

OP, someone may get assassinated from a cartel thug on a jetski, But Cancun is the same as it has always been. Current climate is irrelevant.

The skill of not looking helpless while traveling goes a long way to preventing violent occurrences. Or getting gas at 5AM in the ATL.

This has happened to multiple co-workers of mine - including a naturalized Mexican national that was over 6 feet tall and NOT pre-disposed to being afraid of any such scenarios. He and his wife were put up against a wall - along with 10 or so other civilians - and held at rifle point by (supposed) federales for like 3 hours. He was fricking livid when he got back to the States, although it completely scared the shite out of him.
No real reason was ever given to them, but they were roughly searched and held for 3 hours - in full public view.

Cancun is extremely safe. I was just there a couple weeks ago. My buddy is there now

I flew into Tulum last week and had zero issues at our resort close to Playa Del Carmen.
However, and I will try to make this brief, my neighbors who went a few days before us, were picked up at the hotel and told that their driver, Francisco, the name that was mentioned in their confirmation email from their hotel, could not make it because of a service issue with his vehicle. The new drivers proceeded to drive them 10 mins past the ferry to Isla Mujeres and told them the hotel had arranged private transportation. They were wary, but now in a moving car driving past their expected stop. Once they stopped, in what was described as "middle of no where by the water" the new drivers tried to take their luggage to load onto the private boat. They refused, and the drivers then demanded that they pay them for the ride they had just given them. Also, some guy shows up saying "I am Francisco your driver, and this is ok, just come this way."
They refused to pay anything, flagged down a couple on a golf cart, and had them drive them back to an area to catch a cab to the ferry port.
That stufff happens everyday...scary stuff. They will probably never go back to Mexico.

The entire economy of the region is built around keeping tourists safe and coming back. There are tens of millions of visitors a year.

I will never do Cancun in the summer again just bc of the seaweed and sea lice they called it. Couldn’t get in the water at all. January February is always perfect.

Eh, I felt same way but it's a two hour flight with smaller kids. Beats driving to Port Aransas or flying all the way to St. Lucia with a connection. Works for a 3 day weekend trip.

This is ridiculous. Living in Houston, there isn't a week that goes by that I don't know someone vacationing in Playa, Cabo, Cancun, or Isla Mujeres. Nobody worries about it the slightest. Don't do stupid things when you're there. Just go into town and stay in the main areas. Take an excursion if you want to Tulum or the cenotes, or just stay at your fabulous resort and relax. There's no different between going now and 2 years ago. They want our $$$ there.
