That's money that we will never see for services that should have been performed by the American workers. I see nothing but hispanics or blacks at Western union in Publix just mailing out their cash(however many of them are legal). I have a general beef with migrants sending money back to wherever they came from- did they come to live here or fleece us for our money.

I think of it like a trade deficit, except they live here and commit crimes to boot and take away work from lower skilled workers.

25-28 billion just leaving our economy every year.

Yeah, remittances need the big tax hammer. Feel free to go home.

How do you know they're illegal? The "or blacks" portion of your statement really calls that into question.

Thanks for sharing this information. A remittance tax is definitely in order.

I've been told that the drug war against cartels was influenced by the amount of money leaving the country as much as the harm to drug users.

This is the same situation.

Many countries don’t want their citizens back who’re illegally in the US because their economy depends on the influx of dollars from them.

I look at this way - if some guy is working and doing well enough here to send money back home it's about the last fricking thing on earth we should be complaining about. He's obviously being a productive member of society. Would we prefer that he brings the whole family with him to consume public services?

I'm good with that

I do think it's rather telling that OP just assumes they're illegal when we know he has no way of knowing this

He said IN THE POST that some may be legal.

The gripe is over the remittances... and a good gripe at that.

Tax it!!

A problem with this thought is that if a person is here illegally, they aren’t paying income taxes. They’re either getting paid in cash or they’re stealing a Social Security number in order to file a return.

The businesses that employ them aren’t paying payroll taxes, either, giving them an advantage over their competition by saving thousands.

This is a huge issue and it’s not fair for American citizens who pay the income taxes which pay for their services.

Not to mention, just because someone is here and working doesn’t mean they’re doing that well. A lot of these folks will pack 20 people in a house and live off of $300 a month so they can send money back.

Every day, this board becomes more and more like the caricature Dems have painted for years.

A productive member of which country's society? If he's sending the money back, he's not contributing to American society, now is he?

Not sure why you're knighting for people who take away from our country while benefiting from it. It's really not that hard to understand. All that's being asked is some sort of recompense.

Who gives a shite about the Dims anyway.

That's why external Western Union transfers should be taxed at 50%.

I hope 17 roofers move.into the 3/2 next door to you. They are able to send money back because they live like ants while here.

$25 billion's not a very large number considering how many illegal aliens are in the country. I'd be more interested to know the cost of state and federal benefits paid to illegal immigrants, including legal costs and unreimbursed health care services. I'd also like to know how much illegal aliens draw in wages and collectively pay in state and federal taxes, and how many crimes they collectively commit. Our govt collects stats for every imaginable sort of economic minutia, but doesn't seem eager to create a publicly available database for those kind of annual numbers.

Are these people stealing this money, or are they being paid in exchange for goods and services?

If the latter, are we now being selective with the “It’s mine and I can do with it what I want.” mindset?
