Maybe I'm naive, I just find it hard to believe a couple of decades ago any Senator would be on TV supporting a foreign leader and talking about how they can team up with him to defeat the will of the US President.

He pretty much has. I'd argue that he has to say 'no' to something for bargaining power which explains Crimea but, yeah, compared to Putin he has done pretty much anything Trump has asked of him.

These are proposed negotiation concessions, not “frick it, trump proposed it for a peace settlement so let’s do it regardless of any agreement” proposals.
